Resource & Information Advisor

Division: Employment Services, Employment and Training
Work Status: Full-Time
Location: Durham Region (all offices as required)


About the Role:

The Employment Services of John Howard Society is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. Its goal is to provide support to individuals to obtain sustainable employment through a full suite of services that include Information/Resource, Client Service Planning and Coordination, Job Search, Job Placement and Matching and Job Retention.


Resource and Information is an open access labour market service at JHS that provides information on local training and employment opportunities, community service supports, occupational and training requirements, including trades and apprenticeship and workshops. Resource and Information services support “unassisted” and “assisted” job seekers. Anyone in the community, including job seekers, employers, and others may use the resources and information. There are no eligibility and access criteria.


You’ll be working on things like:


Service User Support

  • Preliminary screening of all inquiries from potential service users, and subsequently inform them of appropriate services.
  • Follow up calls to determine outcomes/status updates for service users.
  • Reminder calls and contact with service users for scheduled appointments/workshop registration.
  • Remain current with the Durham Region labour market trends and develop Resource and Information activities relevant to service user needs.
  • Direct and assist service users regarding completion of forms
  • Assist service users with resume writing, cover letters, interview skills, and effective job search techniques
  • Facilitate training and job search workshops
  • Schedule and conduct individual appointments as necessary for more intensive assistance with any career decision making or job search activities
  • Provide support for completing registration, applications, and submissions for such things as access to education, training programs, and income support.
  • Answer telephone calls from individuals requesting information
  • Conduct specialized surveys with Resource Centre users as required
  • Provide technical support, i.e., setting up e-mail accounts, internet, faxing, photocopying, etc.
  • Assist with the navigation of application forms.
  • Assist with on-line self-assessment (Career Cruising), employment preparation, career, employment, and training decision making
  • Provide career and employment counselling as needed

Community, Statistical Administration & Other

  • Demonstrated ability to collect and gather statistical information, meet deadlines and monthly targets.
  • Planning marketing strategies for the Resource Room, incorporating targeted activity, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Ensure that the Resource Centre is always clean and orderly
  • Liaises with other program staff to ensure coordination between programs and utilizing available resources.
  • Make referrals to community agencies as deemed appropriate
  • Develop, collect, and display job search in centre and on website, educational and training related information/resources in an appealing manner ensuring displays are kept current and resources are well-stocked.
  • Representing the agency in the community when required
  • Attend workshops, meetings and seminars as requested
  • Other related duties as required

If you have the following…we want to hear from you!

  • Related Community College program of study
  • Employment, general counselling and customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of pre-employment support methods, retraining opportunities and labour market information and resources.
  • Proven experience working with all different type of job seekers, including youth, newcomers, internationally trained professionals, newcomers, OW, EI and ODSP recipients, individuals experiencing long term unemployment and differently able persons.
  • Strong case management and organization skills
  • Strong computer skills in a Windows environment using Office 365 applications, as well as knowledge of computerized career and job search tools.
  • Experienced in using Zoom to host/co-host meetings, including using polls, breakout rooms, annotation mode
  • Strong knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite and Wordpress
  • Strong self-management skills to achieve project goals within short timelines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to take initiative and work as part of a team
  • Able to work in an environment that requires the ability to collect and gather statistical information, meet deadlines and targets.

Status: Full Time

Duration: Continuous

Hours: 8:00AM to 4:00PM, must have the ability to flex their schedule when required

Location: Durham Region (Oshawa, Whitby)

Reports to: Coordinator, Employment Services

Travel: Yes, as required with mileage reimbursement

Salary: $22.00 to $22.44 per hour

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in all JHS Durham locations, along with other locations within Durham Region
  • Must be able to work remote if required
  • Physical activity includes, walking, sitting, standing
  • May be required to lift to 35lbs
