Position Overview:
Reporting to Director, Facilities Planning, Redevelopment & Project Management Office, the successful candidate will work closely with hospital leadership, physicians, clinical staff and community groups to oversee the planning, design, construction and close-out of major Facilities Planning and Redevelopment projects.

The Project Manager will be responsible for leading the planning and implementation of SHN’s major redevelopment projects across the hospital network. The incumbent will work closely with internal stakeholders as well as managing external consultants, architects, engineers and contractors. The Project Manager will lead several capital redevelopment projects and oversee consultant and contractor procurement, business cases, design briefs, feasibility studies, contract drawings and specifications. The Project Manager will be responsible for preparing and managing the project budget and schedule, and providing project status updates to hospital leadership.

The successful candidate will have outstanding written and oral communication skills, be an active listener, and have an ability to engage and manage multi-disciplinary stakeholders. The successful candidate will ideally be focused on professional growth and continuing education, and have a desire to effect positive change in healthcare facilities. The Project Manager must work collaboratively within a small team of Project Managers and Project Coordinators.

The incumbent is expected to contribute to creating a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff and others, working in compliance with the hospital code of conduct and the provisions of health and safety policies and legislation, utilizes protective equipment provided and identifies and reports hazards.

The candidate must be able to work at all three hospital sites, and have access to transportation to travel between sites when required. The primary office site for the team is located at Birchmount hospital.

Responsibilities:
  • Preparing RFPs for recruitment of architects, engineers, and contractors
  • Preparing high level project budgets and concept designs
  • Reviewing architectural drawings prepared by external consultants for coordination with existing infrastructure and coordination between architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines
  • Engaging internal stakeholders including Clinical Leadership, Plant Operations, Logistics, Environmental Services, etc., to ensure user-centred design
  • Consulting with various departments for physical space planning, construction, phasing, and operational requirements to ensure efficiency and minimal disruption to hospital operations
  • Engaging hospital leadership through steering committees and user group meetings
  • Engaging with MOH Health Capital Branch and Ontario Health to ensure seamless reviews of capital submissions
  • Occasionally assisting in space planning and coordination on an as-needed basis
  • Engaging key internal departments such as Workplace Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, and Risk Management to ensure hospital policies and procedures are followed
Requirements:
  • University Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, or equivalent
  • 5-10 years of experience in architecture, engineering, construction management or functional planning
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare setting
  • Ability to engage wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including medical leadership, frontline clinicians, support services, plant operations, etc.
  • Exceptional project management skills, including knowledge of PMI best practices
  • Experience with all stages of Ministry of Health Capital Planning processes
  • Solid understanding of building codes and standards, including but not limited to, Ontario Building Code and CSA Z8000
  • Knowledge of City of Toronto bylaws, design standards, and planning processes
  • Understanding of construction law and health and safety standards
  • Knowledge of Broader Public Sector procurement practices
  • Knowledge of AODA standards
  • Knowledge of best practice design in healthcare facilities, including architectural finishes, programming, and equipment layout
  • Demonstrates values consistent with SHN’s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
  • Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
  • Exceptional time management skills, must be able to work independently to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
Technical Skills:
  • Computer skills with hands-on capabilities in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and ability to navigate CAD drawings/files
Asset:
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent
  • Licensed Architect (OAA), Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • LEED Accredited Professional
  • Ability to speak another language
