Meno ajimoowin anookiwin (Knowledge Translation Specialist)

Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a resource for 31 First Nations Communities. We promote public health in the region. We support communities as they develop, carry out, and measure the results of their own public health programs.

We are seeking a Meno ajimoowin anookiwin (Knowledge Translation Specialist) to be a member of our team.

In this job you will help communities to understand health data, such as disease rates or rates of vaccination in a community. The goal of this information is to help people make health decisions, so it must be shared in a meaningful way. You will help us reflect Anishinabe ways of knowing in our reports and bring community voices into the work.

You will also help communities identify their own data needs and priorities. You will work to strengthen communities through training and mentoring, so that local people can manage and use data to improve programs and health outcomes.

The Meno ajimoowin anookiwin (Knowledge Translation Specialist) is directly accountable to the Roots for Community Wellbeing Manager.

Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in a health field or Indigenous studies or equivalent working experience.
  • Two years’ work experience in a health setting.
  • Knowledge of the people, culture, language, history, and governance of First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout area.
  • Knowledge of best practices and approaches that reflect community ways of knowing.
  • An understanding of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession, or the willingness to learn.
  • Ability to build respectful relationships with First Nations people and partner agencies.
  • Ability to communicate in ways that makes difficult concepts easy to understand.
  • Able to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Must be willing to travel and able to travel to communities in small aircraft, via winter road etc.
  • Ability to communicate in one or more of the First Nations dialects within the Sioux Lookout area, or willingness to learn.
  • An understanding of how First Nations health systems work, either through personal experience or work experience.
  • An understanding of data collection or do research with First Nations in a culturally safe way.
  • Previous experience of reviewing health data.
  • Willing to learn about collecting and analyzing data so that it can be used in health planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work closely with First Nation communities and Tribal Councils to:
    • Identify data needs and priorities
    • Identify what will be measured and kept track of regionally and at community level
    • Use effective approaches to collect data
    • Understand available data or research and put it into useful practices within the community to improve health
    • Develop policies on how data will be governed and used that protects First Nations information and respects First Nations sovereignty
    • Provide training and mentorship on data and planning using approaches that reflect community ways of knowing
    • Connect them to other program areas in Approaches to Community Wellbeing to support their programming
  • Work closely with the Roots for Community Wellbeing team to
    • Develop health status reports that better reflect Anishinabe ways of knowing
    • Develop communication materials to share the data findings to community members in a way that is meaningful to them
  • Review existing research and communicate findings across the region
  • Share knowledge and Indigenous methods with communities and Approaches to Community Wellbeing staff.
  • Provide help when required and any other duties assigned
