Vice President of Operations


The Sutherland Group is seeking a Vice President of Operations who will be responsible for overseeing and supervising the operations of BC Eco’s Roadbuilding and Harvesting divisions, Hadean Aggregate Services, KC Drilling & Blasting, Brooklyn Barge and Tug and Summit Truck and Equipment Repair. It will involve planning, directing and coordinating operations in multiple areas to support the growth of the Sutherland Group. The VP of Operations will utilize strong communication to build and maintain relationships with suppliers and employees, as well as being responsible for the performance of their direct reports. This position can be based out of our Nelson or Salmo BC locations.


RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES


  • With the support of Sutherland Group shared services, prepare annual business plans, budgets and staffing plans for operating companies within their portfolio.
  • Participate in annual planning sessions, quarterly rock setting and weekly meetings with the Sutherland Group executive.
  • Lead the Project Management function for Sutherland Group and ensure that departmental decisions and project plans such as those for staffing, development, organization, material efficiency, hardware acquisitions, and facilities are in line with the organization's business plan and vision.
  • Ensure all actions incorporate “Sutherland Group Enterprise’s Core Values” of Curious and Adaptable, Trustworthy, Humbly Confident, Better Together and Make it Happen while working on behalf of the company.
  • Always Be Recruiting, to meet the operational needs, expand and increase the skill set of the division.
  • Communicate the strategic direction, provide leadership, mentoring and direction to General Managers within the portfolio.
  • Identify training and development needs of leaders within the department.
  • Ensure that departmental decisions and project plans such as those for staffing, development, organization, material efficiency, hardware acquisitions, and facilities are in line with the organization's business plan and vision.
  • Be accountable for the safety performance within their portfolio and for actively contributing to a “Safety First” culture by championing and enforcing all safety related initiatives.
  • Be accountable for service expectations at all locations in the division, which will include customers meetings and hitting identified targets.
  • Monitor revenues, budgets and equipment efficiency and provide weekly scorecard data.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to drive business development.
  • Implement policies and procedures as required.
  • Implement EOS™ within their group, including facilitation of weekly Level 10 meeting

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS


  • At least 10 years of industry-related experience including 3 years in upper management.
  • Project management experience, coordinating multiple crews or contractors is an asset.
  • Degree or diploma in Business Administration, Logistics, Engineering, or other industry-related field required; MBA preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of provincial employment and occupational safety legislation.
  • Considerable tact and discretion required in dealing with employees, managers and external enforcement authorities.
  • Previous experience in implementing EOS™, Lean Six Sigma or ISO management systems.
  • Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven experience in technical writing, process and procedure development.
  • Strong organizational, planning and management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint.
