Duties

The Senior Marine Inspector’s duties and responsibilities include the following:

Inspection of ships for regulatory compliance, seaworthiness, and protection of the marine environment, and issue inspection certificates.
Investigates a wide variety of accidents, pollution incidents, and alleged infractions of the Canada Shipping Act and Canada Labour Code.
Acts as project manager on multi-faceted audits/inspections of vessels covering nautical, marine engineering, and naval architecture.
Approves ship’s plans prior to construction.
Audits ship safety systems, ship navigation, cargo handling and stowage procedures.

Inspectors work in all climates in an environment of high stress due to the possible impact of error and real or potential conflict. In the course of ensuring that regulations are respected, inspectors carry significant responsibility and accountability and their decisions have a direct impact on the safety of Canadians.

Intent of the process

There are immediate needs for the following locations: Bathurst (New Brunswick), Moncton (New Brunswick), Saint John (New Brunswick), St. John's (Newfoundland and Labrador) and Dartmouth (Nova Scotia). For each extraction of applications, a pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established to staff identical or similar positions of various linguistic profiles, tenures and locations. These extractions will take place on an "as and when required" basis.

✔ Five (5) years of experience in marine design, construction, repair, operation, inspection, quality assurance or other marine related areas or in technical or operational management of ships or marine related electrical engineering/technology or as master or chief mate or second or third-class engineer on ships of 150 gross tonnage or more.

✔ Experience as a port captain or as an independent surveyor or as a surveyor for classification societies, Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I Clubs).

✔ Experience in managing large technical projects.

✔ Experience as a marine superintendent of a vessel.
