Job Overview

The Manager, Payroll oversees the planning and execution of the payroll function for the organization including the Canadian and US operations. Including providing guidance and support for highly complex payroll requirements, including payroll tax, tax reporting, projects based on operational needs, and ensuring the delivery of payrolls timely, accurately, and efficiently


Job Responsibilities

  • Direct the day-to-day payroll operations to ensure accurate and on-time payroll processing, including high volume of transactions for different employee groups in multiple provinces and states.
  • Oversee and manage all payroll ongoing and year-end processes to ensure the creation plus timely and accurate legislated reporting for cross border tax filing. Ensure payroll tax payments follow applicable federal, provincial, and state tax laws and regulations by keeping up to date with employment standards, tax changes and legislation.
  • Plan and control payroll projects and system software through the project life cycle, with the overall goal of process improvement.
  • Oversee payroll accounting function with respect to payroll disbursements, journal entries, allocation reports, G/L table building, mapping, and reconciliation.
  • Responsible for the integrity of payroll data from the HRIS integration into Ceridian Dayforce.
  • Drive efficiencies through streamlining of processes and execution of automation including various projects to ensure the team can perform to the best of their abilities through value- add work.
  • Build and maintain relationships with payroll vendors and other internal and external resources to meet the executive payroll needs of the organization.
  • Ensure development and implementation of process improvements to build efficiency and increase productivity throughout al payroll tasks.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on key performance indicators for payroll.
  • Bring escalated complex payroll issues to a timely and accurate resolution.
  • Develop and maintain payroll policy, procedure and internal controls documentation that are in accordance with statutes and regulations at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in a high volume, Canadian and US Payroll Management role
  • Canadian Payroll Association’s Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) Certification.
  • Strong attention to detail, and the proven ability to take initiative, make independent decisions, exercise sound judgement, develop creative solutions and meet deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian multi-jurisdictional and US payroll requirements.
  • Experience working with Ceridian Dayforce would be considered an asset.
  • Effective change management skills.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Experience with financial statements, payroll tax audits, tax forms, benefits administration, general ledger, and payroll accruals.
  • Collaborative leader with ability to work well in a small team with heavy reliance on sharing information and ensuring proper back up.
  • Ability to multitask, respond to ad hoc questions and interruptions while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience working with Ceridian Dayforce would be considered an asset.
  • Bilingual (English and French) would be considered an asset.
