The LMS & eLearning Specialist supports the development and maintenance of the College’s online courses. This includes transforming text-based course materials into innovative designs using the effective application of web development to create learning objects, interactive web pages, custom tools, etc. to be used in the College’s online course offerings. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with the Online Learning Centre’s (OLC) Quality Assurance (QA) standards at Conestoga. The incumbent will work closely with eLearning Developers, Instructional Designers, and Media Services online course projects to develop quality online courses that support active learning and recommend corrective and preventative measures during the course development process. The incumbent will provide support and guidance as it pertains to the effective use of the LMS.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 2-3 days on-site, and 2-3 days remote.

The position will work at the Kitchener campus, located at 3065 King Street.

Responsibilities:

Course Development

  • Collaborates with project teams (e.g., instructional designers, curriculum developers, media services, quality assurance specialists, etc.) to develop quality online courses
  • Develops and maintains web-based objects to support the College’s online course offerings (e.g., learning objects, games, interactive web components, etc.)
  • Develops instructional content into Conestoga’s chosen Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Communicates regularly with members of the project team, providing development updates, coordinating meetings, etc.
  • Assists eLearning Developers on larger course development projects, developer templates, standards, and ad hoc development requests
  • Creates practice exercises, knowledge checks, and other instructional elements using the LMS tools
  • Manipulates, sources, and maintains course graphics as needed

Course Maintenance and Revisions

  • Works with curriculum developers, Faculty, Chairs, instructional designers, and others at the College to implement requested and required online course revisions
  • Completes OntarioLearn course revisions requests and loads courses to the OntarioLearn LMS
  • Modifies content for use on other devices (mobile phones/tablets)
  • Develops alternative formats for eLearning activities
  • Tests and troubleshoots courses for technical correctness, usability, custom interactives and multimedia, and other technical issues
  • Develops and tests courses using accessibility software to ensure courses are AODA compliant
  • Converts approved designs to responsive, accessible HTML5 web pages for the website

Technical and OLC Support

  • Responds to inquiries and provides eConestoga technical support via email, phone, virtual, and in-person
  • Performs LMS administrative tasks (e.g., managing accounts, courses, and system settings)
  • Masters functionality within the system and best practices
  • Provides guidance and expertise to students and faculty as it relates to effective use of the LMS
  • Keeps up to date with regularly scheduled platform changes
  • Creates and updates technical documentation

Quality Assurance (QA)

  • Maintains and revises an ongoing QA process that continually improves as online learning evolves at the College
  • Guides OLC and project teams on copyright and AODA requirements and practices specific to online courses
  • Works with OLC to train and inform Conestoga employees on requirements and quality standards
  • Conducts QA analysis and testing, identifies and documents defects, and fixes issues according to set timelines
  • Ensures online courses and programs meet college standards before released
  • Advises project teams when QA standards are not met, making recommendations as needed


Qualifications:

  • Three-year Diploma or Degree in Information Technology, Computer Programming, Applications Development, Mobile Solutions Development, Business, or Arts
  • Minimum one year of practical web development experience required; Preferably for post-secondary education
  • Experience incorporating technology and media to improve the learners’ experience and supporting users with technical support
  • Knowledge of learning management systems, preferably Brightspace by D2L
  • Understanding of responsive designs and how they function across desktops, tablets, and mobile phones
  • Strong technical skills including HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, etc.
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; Ability to interact successfully with project stakeholders, and communicate expectations and suggestions effectively
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, meet deadlines, and use good judgment and initiative in problem resolution
  • Demonstrated superior work ethic, initiative, ability to work independently with occasional direction
