Position Summary
The International Student Advisor ( ISA ) ensures that all international and new immigrant students have a meaningful, engaging, and academically successful experience at Confederation College, through the provision of appropriate advisory and support services. The ISA ensures the coordinated development and delivery of related support and transitions programs. Job responsibilities include providing one-on-one personal advising and group information sessions or workshops aimed at enhancing the experience and success for this diverse group of students. Students will vary considerably in age, maturity, ethnicity, and academic qualifications, requiring a sensitive, flexible, and student-centred approach in all that the ISA does.
The ISA supports college faculty and staff to address and resolve student issues as they occur throughout the semester.
The ISA is highly knowledgeable about, and responsible for, providing timely and accurate advising and support services about topics including, but not limited to, immigration as it pertains to international students, academic policies, college services, medical insurance and social/cultural/community transition.
This position requires intercultural awareness, empathy, patience, understanding, creativity, good listening and perception skills, and exceptional organisational and communication skills. These qualities are critical to the success of the position and to maintain good relationships with students, colleagues and partners.
The ISA must also be able to able to work in a fast paced environment, with multiple deadlines, demands and interruptions.

Minimum level of formal education required for the position
3 year diploma/degree plus professional certification or equivalent

Specific course(s), certification, qualification, formal training or accreditation required for the position
Additional requirements obtained by course(s) of a total of 100 hours or less

Additional Requirements

Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor ( RIISIA ) or Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant ( RCIC ) certification

Field(s) of Study
Minimum 3-yr college diploma in Human Resources, Community Services, or a related field AND RISIA or RCIC certification

Experience

Typical number of years of experience, in addition to the necessary education level, required to perform the responsibilities of the position
Minimum of three (3) years

Type of Experience
Three years of practical experience in a culturally diverse environment providing direct counselling and support to clients (preferably international students). The experience must be directly related to the human or community services field with direct responsibility for regularly meeting with, and advising clients. It must have resulted in proven awareness of cross cultural issues and concerns. Experience and/or familiarity with the Banner student system would be an asset.
