Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Perform a full range of mechanical repairs on facilities, equipment, buildings and maintenance of grounds. Maintain an active preventive maintenance program, including related filing and data input. Keep accurate and detailed records of work assignments, hours logged, purchases, repairs etc. Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with applicable legislation, policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining a parts inventory, including ordering and researching cost effective alternatives. Provide training to assigned staff. Provide input for budget management, plant upgrades etc. as required.


QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Completion of an Apprenticeship Program from a recognized College or Trade school as a Certified Industrial Mechanic (Millwright).
  • Post-secondary or continuing education training in a mechanical, electrical, maintenance or industrial maintenance related field is preferred.
  • Post-secondary or continuing education training in electrical/electronic technologies an asset.
  • Post-secondary or continuing education training with computer applications relevant to this position. I.e. PLC training is preferred.
  • College level courses required for acquiring and maintaining Gas Technician License are an asset.
  • Completion of additional certifications/courses related to water/wastewater operation and treatment would be considered an asset.


KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of experience in the maintenance of a water/wastewater system and treatment plant and/or similar industrial environment. Experience in the maintenance of a water system and treatment plant and/or a wastewater system and treatment plant or similar industrial environment as a Certified Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) is an asset.
  • Must possess proven mechanical and/or electrical knowledge and experience in the following areas:
    • pipefitting and minor plumbing repairs
    • welding and metal fabrication
    • preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of pumping equipment
    • preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of engines, instrumentation and other electrical devices
    • maintenance of boiler systems (gas fired)
    • SCADA systems, instrumentation, PLCs or other similar systems
  • Must possess OIT Certifications/Licences:
    • Positions in Water require: Water Treatment and Water Distribution at hire.
    • Positions in Wastewater require: Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection within 6 months of hire.
  • Must obtain Class I Treatment Certificate/Licence within 30 months of hire (requires 2 years of valid operational experience, at 50% credit).
  • Level 1-4 Water Treatment Licence and/or Level 1-4 Wastewater Treatment Licence is considered an asset.
  • A valid Gas Technician License as required by the Province of Ontario is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience with a computerized maintenance management system is preferred.
  • Must complete all mandatory training, as listed in the W-WW training matrix, within 6 months of hire.


SKILLS

  • Must be able to work without direct supervision.
  • Must possess basic and applied mathematical skills, mechanical aptitude, numerical ability and spatial relations.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess computer skills (e.g. Outlook, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and mapping software).
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work under pressure with high volume workload and meet required deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper health and safety practices.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicate and cooperate with others.
  • Proven ability to recognize issues, analyze data, troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and follow established procedures.

  • Ability to provide leadership and guidance to other maintenance staff.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted class licence for the class of the vehicle operated (Class G).
  • Must comply with all aspects of the Regional Respiratory Program Policy. Respiratory Fit Test is mandatory.
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.
  • Work location may be changed in order to facilitate work requirements, training and experience i.e. scheduled moves within the Area from plant to plant.
  • Mandatory participation in stand-by duty schedule, including emergency call-ins.
  • Must be willing to take additional training as assigned by the Employer.
  • May be required to participate in various shift assignments.

Shift Information


This position is subject to overtime and standby. The position is currently assigned to Area 3 Wastewater, which includes treatement facilities in St.Catharines, Thorold, Grimsby and Niagara on the Lake. The successful applicant may be required to work at any facility within the respective Area and/or Water/Wastewater Treatment system in accordance with the collective agreement.
