Position Summary
Red Deer Polytechnic currently inviting applications for two full-time, permanent Academic Liaison positions starting in June of 2023. The successful candidates will be working within the Donald School of Business, Science and Technology programs as well the Early Learning Child Care (ELCC) program in the School of Education and Trades. This position will report to the Director, International and work collaboratively with faculty and staff within the schools.
The Academic Liaison is a primary resource for students in the identified schools providing advice and guidance through their student lifecycle to connect with supports, as needed, in the institution. They serve as both an initiator and responder, helping students identify key milestones or steps they should achieve, and redirects students to resources of which they may be unaware. This role is designed to support the transition, progression, and retention of students and to ensure students have a positive experience at each step in their post-secondary career.

Position Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the Academic Liaison include but are not limited to:
  • Provide guidance and support to students, in a professional manner, on areas such as cultural adjustment for those new to Canada, and integration into the Polytechnic and local community for those new to higher education and Central Alberta
  • Provide general program information to students as required
  • Deploy intervention and retention strategies, in conjunction with the schools and campus support departments, when a student is on academic probation or identified as being at academic risk within a course or program
  • Anticipate student needs, proactively respond to student requests, provide recommendations extending beyond a student’s initial request, and identify opportunities to enhance students’ problem solving and self-direction abilities
  • Navigate students towards appropriate student supports/services and provide guidance on how to access these supports/services. (e.g. writing skills, reading supports, study supports, math supports, accessibility services, counselling service, stress and time management, etc.)
  • Coordinate communications with all current students regarding enrolment management and student success with Student Connect Centre Advisors
  • Advocate on the behalf of students, when necessary, and ensure all students are aware of their rights and responsibilities as an RDP student and as a member of the broader community
  • Provide basic support navigating technology (I.e., Teams, Blackboard, etc.)
  • Provide basic study supports for areas such as time management and stress management, etc.
  • Assist in building an effective schedule for managing completion of assignments and studying for assessments
  • Serve as a single point of contact for Faculty members wishing to direct students in academic difficulty to supports and services available on-campus
  • Educate Faculty members on the various services and supports available to them in support of their students needing additional academic guidance
  • Develop and lead school-based orientation activities in alignment with the broader Polytechnic New Student Orientation program
  • Liaise with Student Success Division and Division of Strategic Enrolment Management to create an effective integrated support system for students within the school
  • Compile and analyze statistics on student trends, issues, and success rates, identifying and providing suggestions for intervention strategies for students who may be at risk academically while ensuring compliance with FOIPP standards

Required Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate in Business Administration, Office Administration, or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, including SharePoint
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new software programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a team
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and proactively complete tasks
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with all contacts internal and external to the Institution
  • Experience preparing meeting agendas, minutes, letters and memos accurately
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication skills and phone manners


Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of university in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent.
  • Experience using BlackBoard 9.1, Banner, Cognos would be an asset
  • Current knowledge of the administration of a post-secondary educational institution would be an asset
