Zoo Keepers are safety-conscious, neat, punctual, organized, animated, fun, and resourceful people who enjoy working with Reptilia's animals and guests in the Zoo and Theatre.

Zoo Keepers are gifted at putting the 'Personal Touch' into each guest's visit through the creation of Magic Moments.

Role Objectives

• Ensuring that all animals maintained are fully cared for to CAZA standards or beyond
• The zoo’s appearance is always kept up to the highest standard
• All of our Visitors enjoy a personal, educational, safe, and unforgettable experience
• All zoo programs are promoted as part of the Visitor experience and Conservation promotion
• The facility, equipment, and stock of supplies are maintained to HT standards
• The facility changes regularly and on schedule creating a better guest experience and working environment

Ideal Experience

• Reptile husbandry and hands-on experience with a variety of reptiles from all the major orders (experience with other species will also be considered)

• Exposure to both large and venomous snakes as well as crocodilians from a recognized facility

• High level of knowledge on the natural histories of reptiles gained from various different sources and/or willingness to learn

• Understand the natural behaviours of animals in the wild, their habitats, and the local culture.

• Extensive experience in showmanship and also dealing directly - one on one - with kids and their parents
• Some experience being handy – good with minor repairs (e.g. enclosures)

Critical Competencies for Success

• Has commensurate competency with reptile husbandry and our zoo reptiles

• Experienced with parents and their kids – speaks without fault – able to manage a crowd without scolding

• Good at 'Showmanship' and thoroughly enjoys it – is patient and calm in all situations

• Goes out of their way to engage the Guests – clearly a 'People Person'

• Has clearly shown self-direction – takes initiative once the objective is known – has a demonstrated track record

• Makes direct eye contact and smiles frequently

• Recognizes that verbal communication is our product and must be delivered commendably

• As a person - creative - relishes exhibit/enclosure creativity and changes

• Is fully familiar with and abides by the applicable How-To Books

• Is observant, detail orientated, and aware of the surroundings – important for safety and Guest impressions

• Is able to work when required – time off unlikely during busy times – always punctual and reliable

• Always has a neat and clean appearance and is in good physical condition – some lifting is required

• Has a clear record with the police and can pass a police check

• Follows the safety guidelines and all company guidelines respecting our reptiles

• Is anxious to promote the company, talk with our Guests, and always give out our materials

• Lives Reptilia's Cast Culture – walks the talk

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent
Part-time hours: 15-20 per week

Salary: From $16.50 per hour
