DUTIES

**NOTE: This position is subject to review by the Joint Job Evaluation Committee**

The Sustainability Utility Person position will be a key member of the Sustainability Office and Utility Services teams, and their time will be allocated 50/50 between the two departments to support and assist with zero-waste initiatives.



MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and install zero-waste bins and signage.
  • Collect garbage from outdoor Zero Waste Stations.
  • Separate garbage from recycling.
  • Maintain waste materials sorting areas.
  • Collect garbage and recycling from campus grounds, including buildings, parking lots, hilly areas, and homeless encampments.
  • Perform manual labour including snow removal.
  • Complete inventory of all waste-related bins and current locations on the TRU Kamloops campus.
  • Label all waste and recycling bins with their designated location information.
  • Assist with the rollout of a desk-side recycling program and remove desk-side garbage bins.
  • Assist with waste audits, data collection and inputting of waste and recycling weights/data into tracking sheets where manual input is still required.
  • Assist with coordination of volunteer engagement and programs.
  • Assists with researching ideas and best practices for achieving TRU's zero-waste goals and overcoming barriers and challenges to achieving these goals as they arise.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent


EXPERIENCE:

  • 6 months experience as a utility person or equivalent
  • Experience with hand tools and large equipment (such as garbage compactors and cardboard balers)


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES REQUIRED TO THE JOB

  • Strong safety work ethic and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as a team player
  • Ability to take initiative and proactively provide suggestions to team members
  • Ability to follow instructions, problem solve and think critically
  • Ability to be highly flexible and prioritize multiple tasks with good time management
  • Ability to operate related equipment such as a snow blower, a variety of hand and power tools, and vehicles
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability issues and philosophies


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to extremes of heat, cold, inclement weather, temperature fluctuations
  • Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, noxious odorous, poor ventilation, restrictive work areas
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, bending, and moving for extended periods; and lifting and moving up to 20 kg
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
