Duties

As a member of the Technical and Specialist Services team, reporting to the Manager, Buildings & Grounds, you will provide structural engineering leadership, expertise and guidance for the rejuvenation, rehabilitation, maintenance, and sustainable management of Parks Canada’s contemporary and heritage assets administered by the Yukon Field Unit.

Your duties as a Structural Engineer include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide expert advice, guidance, and direction, including assessments and investigations during maintenance, rehabilitation, and new construction work to inform sound asset life cycle management decision-making.
  • Inspect assets, perform engineering analysis, and prepare technical documents such as building condition assessments, feasibility studies, options analyses, conceptual and schematic designs, drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates.
  • Support the procurement of engineering and architectural consultants and contracted services.
  • Review technical documents related to the maintenance and rehabilitation of built assets from a structural and conservation engineering point of view to support successful asset life cycle management, to provide confidence that quality requirements are fulfilled and to ensure compliance and/or alignment with Agency standards, guidelines and engineering and conservation best practices.
  • Contribute to increased knowledge, innovation, leadership, and expertise within the Agency’s asset management and built heritage conservation communities.

The Technical Services team includes 20 Subject Matter Experts of various disciplines including Bridge Engineer, Civil Engineer, Contemporary and Conservation Architects, Dam Safety Engineer, Environmental Engineer, Fire Protection Engineers, Landscape Architects, Mechanical Engineer, Radio Communication Engineer, Structural Engineer, Water / Wastewater Engineer, etc. who support 36 Field Units across Canada.

ED: Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in Engineering with a specialization in structural engineering.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

OC: Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position. Proof of eligibility must be submitted with the application.

OC: Holder of a professional engineer license issued by a professional engineering regulator in Canada. Proof of license must be submitted with the application.

EXPERIENCE

Recent and significant* experience practicing structural engineering related to contemporary and heritage built assets** in the following activities:

EX1: Conducting site investigations and condition assessments, preparing feasibility studies and options analyses for new, maintenance and rehabilitation work;
EX2: Preparing conceptual and detailed designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and schedules for new, maintenance and rehabilitation work;
EX3: Preparing statements of work/ terms of reference to hire consultants and providing quality assurance reviews of reports, drawings, specifications and other documents;
EX4: Providing onsite quality assurance reviews and advice, guidance and direction during new, maintenance and rehabilitation work;
EX5: Establishing engineering strategies in view of preserving the historic value of heritage assets undergoing maintenance and rehabilitation work;
EX6: Experience involving wood/timber, masonry, concrete and/or steel structures.

  • Recent and significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be gained over a period of at least five (5) years in the past eight (8) years, with that experience performed over a broad range of buildings and structural system types typical of those found at Parks Canada sites.
**Heritage assets are properties designated at federal, provincial, territorial and/or municipal government levels.

K1: Knowledge of structural engineering theories, principles, best practices, past and current codes and standards, including the National Building Code of Canada, related to the design, construction, inspection, maintenance, stabilization and rehabilitation of built assets;
K2: Knowledge of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada;
K3: Knowledge of material properties, deterioration mechanisms, and investigation techniques relevant to the preservation of historic construction materials including wood/timber, masonry, steel, and concrete;
K4: Knowledge of stabilization, repair, and rehabilitation techniques for historic construction materials;
K5: Ability to perform engineering analyses and design of structural components of buildings;
K6: Knowledge of the Canadian National Master Construction Specifications.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

AE1: Experience with the unique challenges of designing structures in remote northern climates, ex. Yukon, Nunavut, NWT;
AE2: Versed in historical wooden building methods, experience with timber framing, experience with wooden boat building, comprehension of wood species and their capabilities, understanding of wood grading and grain structure;
AE3: Knowledge and application of CSA O86 - Engineering design in wood, Canadian Wood Council;
AE4: Experience with 3D structural modelling and analysis software, experience with wood design software (ex. WoodWorks, SAFI GSE, Recap Pro);
AE5: Experience with organizations that promote heritage conservation.

  • Willing to wear identifier clothing and required safety equipment;
  • Willing to travel to various locations in Canada and work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain for extended periods of time;
