Job Summary

A fantastic opportunity for recent graduates to jump-start their forestry careers in beautiful Northern British Columbia!

In these full-time regular BC Timber Sales positions, participants of the Forest Technologist Entry Level Program (FTELP), will gain hands-on experience in all areas of forest technology, paid training and professional development, focused mentorship and support, and assistance obtaining their RFT or RPF designations. Over the two-year training period of the FTELP, participants will work from learning to independently performing a variety of technical and operational duties to support the planning, engineering, and reforestation activities of the Timber Sales Office.

Building on participants’ strong education, they will learn to estimate and compile resource needs, cost requirements, and conduct resource assessments. As integral parts of a high-functioning, multidisciplinary field team, participants will learn to perform various activities required to develop Timber Sales Licenses and support field team operations.

As excellent verbal and written communicators, participants will learn to act as liaisons between stakeholders, participate on a variety of committees, and prepare and present technical reports. In this multifaceted role, participants will become actively engaged in field activities, work towards making independent decisions and play important roles in the community. This position can require physically demanding field work (several days per week) with the potential for adverse weather conditions. This position involves two years of FTELP training followed by employment (two-year commitment) at BCTS in northern BC.

Job Requirements:

  • Recent graduation (within 4 years of start date) from an Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) accredited Forest Technology diploma program or Forestry degree program.
  • Eligible for immediate enrolment as an ABCFP Trainee Forest Technologist or Forester in Training.
    • IMPORTANT: Designation as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the ABCFP is required to be appointed at the STO 18 level. Successful applicants who do not have their RFT or RPF will be appointed at the STO 15 level until they obtain their designation.

Provisos:

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Must be willing and able to work in active forestry road construction sites, in rough terrain, around harvesting and transportation equipment, and in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
  • Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
  • Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and or rotary winged aircraft and or watercraft.
  • Must be willing and able to operate both snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.
  • Must be willing and able to occasionally work outside of normal business hours.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to and from remote parts of the business area and work in remote locations.
  • Must be willing and able to work for four (4) years in Northern BC for BC Timber Sales.

The Forest Technologist Entry Level Program (FTELP) involves two (2) years of training, development and hands-on experience, and an additional two (2) years of related work experience in Mackenzie, Fort St. James or Fort St John. These are permanent opportunities.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
