The Subsurface Energy Development Branch of the Department provides leadership, strategic direction, research, and innovation for building subsurface energy regimes in onshore and offshore Nova Scotia. The Subsurface Energy Branch responsibilities include establishing resource and economic potential for development while ensuring responsible resource stewardship. The Department manages these resources through legislation, regulations, market assessments, and cross-jurisdiction relationships for energy development.

About Our Opportunity


The Senior Geophysicist is generally responsible for monitoring and evaluating offshore and onshore geophysical activities (including managing activity relating to onshore Nova Scotia) and performing technical/ scientific assessments of geophysical programs and data, exploration trends and structure/ field configurations in these areas, all using modem state-of-the-art interpretation techniques. This work also requires making recommendations to the Minister responsible for the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Resources Implementation Act respecting the Minister's fundamental decision authority under the Act. The Senior Geophysicist makes recommendations to the Minister for onshore geophysical regulations and serves as the authorizing agent for private industry regulatory activities.

Specifically, the incumbent approves and monitors seismic activities in the onshore region and is responsible for developing, reviewing, commenting on and amending applicable regulations. In addition, the incumbent uses highly specialized technical skills in petroleum geophysics including scientific analysis of data using modem computer systems, state of the art geophysical software, and working as a team member (including role as team leader on various projects) with the Geologists and Administrators.

Primary Accountabilities


  • Audit, interpret and produce results in the form of maps and/or models from seismic data of multiple vintages, both analogue and digital, 2-D, 3-D, Gravity and Magnetics.
  • Undertake regional studies in order to detect and map various trends and features which may lead to a better understanding of the geoscience used in project planning and advice for regulatory and policy decisions.
  • Preparation of technical papers, poster displays and presentations to industry to promote investment in Nova Scotia’s subsurface energy resource potential.
  • Undertake original geophysical interpretations after loading data into geophysical interpretation software packages to assess or re-assess industry data submissions,
  • Keep abreast of and review existing and new geophysical data,
  • Meet with industry technical professionals (including senior officials) to discuss, present and promote the many aspects of the geology and the geophysics of onshore and offshore Nova Scotia and coordinate the sharing of technical information,
  • Supervise and regulate the acquisition of new seismic programs in the province and maintain liaison with pertinent federal, provincial and industry counterparts.

Qualifications and Experience



The successful candidate will have a Bachelors of Science in the area of earth and geosciences and 7 years of related experience; or a Masters degree and 6 years of related experience; or a Doctorate and 4 years of related experience.

Essential skills, experience, and qualifications required for this opportunity include:

  • Multiple years of experience interpreting and integrating data such as well information, reflection seismic data, associated attributes and interpretations in the Petrel E&P software platform or equivalent experience using an equivalent 3D seismic software suite;
  • Strong knowledge and skills in post stack reflection seismic interpretation, prestack and AVO analysis, 2D and 3D seismic reprocessing;
  • Familiarity working with high resolution reflection seismic, sonar and multibeam data related to marine geohazard assessment and subsurface infrastructure planning;
  • Multiple years of experience interpreting and manipulating geographic data in the ArcGIS software platform or equivalent experience using an equivalent GIS software suite;
  • Experience presenting complex geoscience to technical and executive stakeholders and rightsholders to support the stewardship, planning, implementation, and regulatory oversight of resource exploration or production programs, and as well as, for sharing and promoting subsurface energy resource opportunities to investment communities;
  • Active membership in the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia (APGNS) or the education and work experience prerequisite to become registered with APGNS if the successful candidate for the Senior Geophysicist position.


Skills and experience with added value for this opportunity include:

  • Expertise in one or more of the following subsurface energy topics: (i) geothermal energy, (ii) petroleum systems modeling, (iii) reservoir modeling, and (iv) carbon sequestration;
  • Experience volunteering for professional societies in industry, government, or academic professional engagement such as APGNS, GAC, CSPG, AAPG, etc.;
  • Experience in workflow automation using computer programming or computer-assisted knowledge systems.

Salary Range: $3,215.50 - $3,781.51 Bi-Weekly
