SENIOR CHIEF STEWARD

As the Senior Chief Steward, you serve as the operations manager and key member of the ship's management team responsible for food & beverage, retail, accommodation, hospitality and all other customer services.

In this role, you are responsible for ensuring employees are able to fulfil their role regarding vessel safety, security and emergency procedures. In addition, you manage the employees' staffing, work assignments, training, supervision and performance management. You serve as the on-board Company management representative on behalf of the Catering Superintendent, and are responsible for the development and control of the vessel catering operations budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring a full range of high quality services are provided consistently to customers in: food & beverage; retail services; stateroom accommodation; passenger information; housekeeping; baggage services and passenger area cleanliness;
  • Lead and manage a diverse team in all aspects of the business, with particular focus on creating developmental plans, mentoring staff and guiding the performance management process as required;
  • Ensuring service delivery and recovery standards are consistent and that the quality and integrity of Company brand and product is maintained at all times;
  • Manages and provides input on the food service menu rotation ensuring quality; portion control; production planning and waste management; inventory management, cost of goods; and ensuring all "stores" orders are approved;
  • Conducting regular security & safety checks of areas used by passengers and crew; ensuring staff are aware of safe working practices; ensuring new hire employees are fully oriented to safety programs; and ensuring all accidents are investigated through site surveys and or risk assessments;
  • Working towards the Company goal of improving safety in all aspects of operations and takes proactive steps to reduce worksite accidents, injuries, and time lost from work;
  • Ensures that all catering and passenger service equipment is in working order, and arranging repairs; ensuring repair work is completed according to BCFC standards;
  • Responsible for on-board revenue management and the integrity of all company assets in the catering, retail and passenger services areas;
  • Ensuring interior space design standards are maintained including; furniture, fixtures, furbishing (decks, bulkheads etc) equipment and signage;
  • Developing the catering refit statement of requirement; completing formal change request process for interior space decision if modification(s) required; preparing the vessel for refit; and attend refit as required;
  • May be required to relieve operationally for the Chief Steward and perform other duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • A minimum 5 years of experience managing a retail/food services facility; preferably in the transportation industry; is strongly preferred;
  • University/College degree or diploma in Business Administration or Hospitality Management would be an asset;
  • Working knowledge of WSBC regulations and safe working practices coupled with a Food Safe/HACCP Certificate;
  • Serving it Right License may be required;
  • Computer literate across various platforms including Microsoft Word, Excel.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing strategic initiatives: leading both a unionized and non-unionized workforce;
  • Demonstrated experience managing food safety and food quality control practices, Good Operating Practices, waste management, HACCP flow charts and Food Service Establishment Inspection;
  • Proficient in budgeting and forecasting
  • Keen acumen in business writing and presentation skills, as well as strong project management skills,
  • Ability to identify and analyse business improvement opportunities that increase shareholder value;
  • Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism required in representing BC Ferries with the internal and external customers;
  • Known for working cohesively as part of a team; coupled with ability to coach, train, counsel and encourage employees;
  • Highly responsible & reliable with a demonstrated capacity to work under extreme pressure in a fast paced environment;
  • Ability to focus attention on guest needs, remaining calm and courteous at all times;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem solving abilities;
  • Flexible to work variable shifts; evenings, weekends and holidays.
