The Developing Brain laboratory studies how babies, children and adolescents interact with others (social abilities) and how they learn and remember information (cognitive abilities). They study children, even early-on in life from the fetal period, using brain imaging technologies and developmental assessments.

Responsibilities


The Research Scientist will study the developing brain using neuroimaging, starting from the fetus until early childhood. They will work to develop preprocessing pipelines to address some of the key difficulties in fetal neuroimaging, and to develop prenatal biomarkers of Intrauterine Growth Restriction. The Research Scientist will be proficient in the scientific techniques used in the lab, including fetal and pediatric neuroimaging techniques and advanced data processing and statistical analysis. They will develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and train lab members in their use, as well as develop and maintain Research Ethics Board protocols. The role will acquire data, coordinate research, and help to recruit participants. They will write abstracts, manuscripts, and scientific reports, and will be expected to play a role in grant writing. The Research Scientist will interact with and help to oversee trainees, and will work in collaboration with other lab staff, postdoctoral fellows and students. The role will enjoy working as part of an interdisciplinary team and will be able to mentor members of the lab.

Qualifications


Education:
  • PhD in cognitive neuroscience or experimental psychology
Experience:
  • 3 years' experience in fMRI
  • Expertise in DTI, EEG, or neuropsychological patient testing is preferred
  • Experience with computer programming (e.g., Matlab, Python, R)
  • Experience working in a medical-research role with patient research participants, and experience preparing ethics submissions
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
  • Experience managing research projects in an academic environment; experience managing and monitoring research budgets
  • Record of original research and academic publications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing research in an academic environment and of best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
  • Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
  • In-depth knowledge of qualitative and quantitative techniques for demonstrating research and program outcomes
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
  • Communication skills with the ability to converse with, complete detailed analytics and reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality and privacy is maintained through the appropriate retention and destruction of information
  • Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
  • A desire to grow and advance research and expertise, which is demonstrated by attending and presenting at conferences and other professional development opportunities
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate extensive travel and consultation with stakeholders across Canada
  • Self-driven, critical thinker who can solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant statistical software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
  • Ability to delegate work and provide team members with clear direction and support in meeting their objectives
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Ability to research new avenues of funding from federal/provincial granting agencies, industry and other funding sources
