Position title
: Sr. Manager, Soil rehabilitation
Location: Montreal (hybrid)
Reports to: Director Soil Rehabilitation
The Sr. Manager, Soil rehabilitation develops and implements strategies to manage significantly contaminated properties associated with Domtar’s current and past operations (wood preserving, coal tar distillation, specialty chemical, roofing, gypsum) to mitigate human health and environmental risks and meet regulatory obligations in a cost-effective manner and manage potentially significant regulatory liability. This job entails working on technically complex sites and challenging governmental, public, and legal contexts.
Job Responsibilities/Accountabilities
:
- Lead and manage teams of multi-disciplinary experts and consultants to make sure that sites managements strategies are fully implemented and objectives for each of the sites (15+) under his responsibilities are met. This includes:
- Selecting the required remediation, risk management and/or monitoring approach.
- Reviewing and approving consultants proposed work plans and budgets.
- Ensuring that the proposed works comply with Domtar’s regulatory obligations and are performed in Domtar’s best interest.
- Represent Domtar and discuss and negotiate management approach and obtain approval from government officials and other interested parties such as affected landowners and First Nations communities.
- Provide highly specialized technical expertise to support Domtar’s operations having soil or groundwater contamination related issues.
- Participate and provide technical support during transactions due diligence processes.
- Develop and implement tools to improve budgets and regulatory obligations management (for 30+ different sites).
- Remain up to date regarding emerging contaminants, remediation technologies and new regulations with respect to site contamination.

- Requires an excellent technical and scientific knowledge specific to site contamination and available technologies, and a good understanding of the regulatory context applicable at each site to lead multi-disciplinary teams in the determination of the best solution specific to each site.
- Requires excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Able to propose innovative solutions and resolve problems in a complex environment and context.
Required Professional Experience/Qualifications :
- University bachelor’s degree in Hydrogeology or Geology (or engineering).
- Minimum of 7 years of experience managing contaminated sites.
- Excellent technical skills to analyze and interpret environmental technical data related to complex contaminated site issues.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Spoken and written English* & French are essential.
This is required since as part of this function, you will have to intervene with customers, partners and/or our American subsidiaries on a recurring basis, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Professional Experience/Qualifications :
Master’s degree in hydrogeology.- Experience in managing contaminated sites in different jurisdictions (in Canada and the USA).
- Experience in managing teams of multi-disciplinary experts.
- Experience in interacting with the public and First Nations Communities.
You must successfully complete a selection process that includes interviews , aptitude tests (for some positions) and reference verification.
