About the Safer Supply Program
The primary focus of the Safer Supply program is flexible, low-barrier access to pharmaceutical opioids through a health equity and harm reduction lens for 200 people. Sanguen Health Centre’s Safer Supply program is embedded within the village of the Inner-City Health Alliance (ICHA). This alliance, as a collective, provides intensive place-based and mobile primary health care, housing, shelter, and social connections to people experiencing precarious housing, poverty and complex health and mental health. Sanguen Health Centre, and the ICHA, work from a trauma-informed, person-centred and harm reduction approach. The Safer Supply program aims to provide essential services to people who use substances by providing prescribed alternatives to street level drugs, managing other health care needs with a goal to reduce overdose-related harms and overdose deaths.
Summary of Role
As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse in the Safer Supply Program works with a team of practitioners to support social and health care needs from a harm reduction model approach to care for people who experience complications related to substance use and complex health/mental health needs. The Registered Nurse assists in the provision of direct patient care in placed based and community settings to improve the health of individuals in the Safer Supply Program. The nurses in the Safer Supply Program must be able utilize a variety of skills and methods including direct client care, nursing outreach, health promotion, and harm reduction education, mental health assessments, as well as, system navigation, and advocacy. The main area of focus for this role is to support the prevention of opioid overdoses and other harms associated with the illicit toxic drug supply in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
Accountabilities
Accountabilities of the Registered Nurse include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting Safer Supply clinics embedded across the Kitchener-Waterloo area including in shelter and congregate settings, transitional housing, and community drop in locations.
- Provide primary care and Safer Supply nursing support through a relational community-based model of care.
- Perform basic nursing skills (wound care, injections, suture/staple removal) and added nursing skills (venipuncture, ECGs) an asset.
- Perform shared administrative and clinic management tasks such as maintaining clinic supplies, triaging clinic flow, and acting as a liaison between the social support roles and the Safer Supply prescribers.
- Assisting with developing care plans, care coordination across an interdisciplinary team and external referrals for clients.
- Conduct assessments on client’s substance use, withdrawal, and program goals using a non-judgemental and non-punitive approach.
- Providing Safer Supply participants with harm reduction education including drug checking, safe injection practices, and overdose prevention.
- Maintaining accurate and timely electronic health records.
- Developing and maintaining positive relationships with service providers, community groups and other agency representatives and individuals working in overdose prevention.
Qualifications
- Current certification as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario required
- Current certification in CPR required.
- Must be fully vaccinated to protect our clients and staff.
- 2-5 years of experience providing community-based health care case management from an anti-oppression, trauma-informed framework or relevant experience
- Must have access to reliable vehicle and car insurance that provides coverage for transporting individuals at work/using your vehicle at work.
- Demonstrated experience working with people with complex substance use and mental health needs, people who are unhoused/precariously housed and with other complex health needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues and treatment modalities, as well as an understanding of substance use disorder and various treatment and harm reduction modalities.
- Experience working with racialized populations, people original to this land - Indigenous peoples, people who engage in sex work, people with current and former involvement in the criminal justice system, people with mental health needs, those living with trauma and people who use drugs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to the principles of harm reduction and experience with overdose prevention/ response. Must have a strong understanding of how to apply harm reduction strategies in the clinical setting.
- Experience working with people who use drugs, as service users and as colleagues.
- Strong communication (verbal and written), organization, and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability in conflict management and interpersonal relations.
- Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams, developing and maintaining positive relationships with service providers
- Ability to work independently and self-directed.
- Front line experience in outreach an asset
- Experience in mental health an asset

Hours and Location of Work
Working hours will be 40 hours per week, primarily daytime hours, with the possibility of occasional weekend and evening hours as demanded by the nature of the work.
The primary place of work will be 130 Victoria St S, Kitchener ON N2G 2B5, and regular travel is required within Waterloo Region by using a personal vehicle.
Compensation and Other Perks
- This is a salaried position with a salary range of $72,000 - $81,000 annually, to be determined based on the experience level of the successful candidate.
- 4 weeks’ vacation which accrues biweekly

- 15 paid sick days per calendar year
