Administrative Full-time New Position

The Supervisor, Recreation & Health reports to the Manager of Recreation, Performance & Health and is responsible for leading the daily operations of Conestoga fitness facilities, fitness & wellness programs, extramural programs, and recreational programs. The incumbent will supervise facility and programming staff, equipment, and the activity taking place in the facilities. The Supervisor will hire, onboard, oversee and performance manage a team of part-time and full-time staff members responsible for the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of student programming.

The Supervisor, Recreation & Health will have a forward-vision mindset, ensuring Conestoga Recreation is leading the field in innovative and meaningful student programs.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 4 days on-site, and 1 day remote.

Responsibilities:

Leadership in the General Operation of Student Recreation & Health

  • Provide leadership for daily operations of Conestoga wellness facilities
  • Maintain records and statistics, analyze quantitative and qualitative statistical data, develop reports, and make recommendations that target continuous improvement
  • Liaise with Athletics & Recreation staff, Student Success departments, Academic departments, Conestoga Students Incorporated, and external community groups on recreational and health events and opportunities
  • Provide input, insight, and feedback to the Athletics and Recreation Management team as the content expert on fitness, recreation, and overall student wellness initiatives and goals.
  • Continuous ideas in fitness and recreation trends established from Professional Development (PD) opportunities and environmental assessments
  • Monitor the recreation program budget and make recommendations for annual and capital budget expenses
  • Responsible for the oversight of inventory, ordering, and purchasing of fitness, recreation & health equipment
  • Work with the management team to develop revenue-generating and cost-saving opportunities for the facility that aligns with the strategic plan

Supervision and Leadership of the Recreation & Health staff

  • Responsible for the supervision and performance management of full-time, part-time, and contract recreation and health staff
  • Provide mentoring to direct reports in resolving employee relations issues
  • Provide direction, coaching, and knowledge-sharing to all staff to ensure accessible and equitable programming for Conestoga students
  • Developing efficient hiring processes to onboard and manage 50+ staff members semesterly
  • Support and coordinate training, knowledge sharing, and performance management of recreation and health staff to ensure highly motivated and excellent performance for Athletics & Recreation
  • Development of leadership positions and employee recognition programs to support
  • Establish new relationships with academic partners to increase Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities in the Athletics & Recreation Department
  • Review and performance management of service-related contracts and personnel
  • Collaborate with management on the development, procurement, and performance management of contract-based personnel

Strategic Growth in Student Programs

  • Oversight and direction of semesterly activity based on informative feedback and industry best practices
  • Successfully analyze and evaluate student programming through the use of surveys, informal and formal student feedback, and environmental scans
  • Develop semesterly reports for the Manager to provide insight, assessment, and trends in student programming, reflecting on defined outcomes
  • In collaboration with the Media Coordinator, create an impactful in-person and online marketing plan for student health and recreation programming

Recreation Projects & Initiatives

  • Work with the management team and support project management strategies for the continual growth of fitness, health, and recreation at various College campuses
  • Develop and lead initiatives (programs, equipment, community partners) focused on minority groups, such as foundational learn-to-play programs, women’s-only programs, sports programs for diverse cultures, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Manager on grant writing, applications, and reporting
  • Network with industry partners to support continual program growth, sponsorship opportunities, etc.
  • Seek out and curate business development and partnership prospects that lead to program, facility, and revenue growth opportunities
  • Align all projects and initiatives with the Conestoga Athletics & Recreation Strategic Plan
  • Provide critical back-up and support for the Manager, Recreation, Performance & Health
  • Involvement in Ontario College Recreation (OCR) committee and other provincial or national committees and learning opportunities


Qualifications:

  • Four-year Degree in Recreation, Recreation Management, Health Promotion, Kinesiology, Sport Administration, Fitness & Health Promotion, or related field
  • Five years of practical experience working within a higher education or student-focused recreational/health environment including three years of management/supervisory experience in the delivery of recreational/health programming
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Advanced computer skills, including familiarity with Recreation Management Software and other applicable software (Microsoft Office Suite)
