Overview

This position is responsible for the organization and implementation of a variety of social, cultural, and/or recreational activities and events at the Seniors Centre in Minoru Centre for Active Living.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, evaluate and implement various recreation programs, activities, and special events to meet the needs of seniors.
  • Market and promote recreation activities.
  • Research trends and opportunities in recreation and events for seniors.
  • Provide customer service to internal and external contacts.
  • Provide administrative support, and first aid application, as required.
  • Provide direction to staff by allocating work, assigning tasks and monitoring work.
  • Assist senior staff as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of organized community recreation principles and practices, social activities, and other pursuits related to various recreational programs.
  • Knowledge of the City of Richmond’s Seniors Service Plan.
  • Knowledge of the recreational, social, educational and cultural interests and requirements and resources for the 55+ population. Ability to organize, coordinate, participate, and provide leadership in recreational program activities.
  • Ability to research, develop and implement new program and special event ideas for 55+ programs and services.
  • Ability to instruct, schedule and provide direction to part-time recreational staff and volunteers; ability to assess and evaluate staff and provide input into performance assessments Ability to effectively communicate written and orally using standard formats and styles.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports related to the work.
  • Ability to monitor and track budgets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, groups, volunteers and the general public.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands; work well under pressure; and deal with stressful situations with professionalism.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service and to diffuse hostility in an effective manner.
  • Knowledge and skill in using City computer applications such as PeopleSoft (HCM), Xplor Recreation, Outlook and Microsoft programs; ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of a Diploma in Community Recreation or related field is preferred. Completion of related coursework equivalent to a minimum of 1 year post-secondary is required, supplemented by a minimum of 1 year and up to and including 2 years of related community recreation experience. An equivalent level of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence for the Province of British Columbia.

Salary Range:
$33.14 - $39.01

Hours of Work:
Tuesday to Saturday (Compressed Work Week).
This position is on a flexible-blocking schedule. Hours will be scheduled based on operational need and can include daytime, evening, weekdays and weekends shifts of varying lengths as each shift can be extended or shortened by moving blocks of time as required within the pay period. Day shifts will be scheduled if there is no operational need for evening and weekend work.
