Under the direction of the R&D Director and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the R&D Packaging Engineer will contribute to the success of product development projects and protecting our products from inventory to customer reception. This person will be responsible for keeping projects within schedule and budgetary constraints and in compliance with quality, technical and cost requirements. The R&D Packaging Engineer will also be responsible for evaluating and improving existing product packaging based on feedback from both internal and external customers. This position will require strong cross functional collaboration with Product Managers (Marketing), Operations staff (Production and Procurement) and the R&D team to ensure success.

As a project team member, you will also be required to demonstrate technical competencies, professionalism and the ability to synthesize information.

This position involves regular communications and giving presentations to large audiences, including company management. Frequent interactions with both internal and external resources and strong communication skills are also required.

Responsibilities and Duties

· Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.

· Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.

· Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.

· Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.

· Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

· Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing.

· Participate in product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market.

· Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.

· Work closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements.

· Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.

· Work with the manufacturing department to insure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability and operational requirements. Participate in operational efficiency improvements where required.

· Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications.

Qualifications and Skills

· A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required.

· Must have 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging.

· Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.).

· Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD software, drafting and specification standards is essential.

Professional Skills and Competencies

· Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts is needed

· Must be able to demonstrate project management skills and experience; project management certification a plus.

· Excellent communication and presentation skills

· Ability to adapt to change

· Strong professionalism, interpersonal skills and work ethic with a focus on driving efficiency

· Ability to work autonomously

· Motivated and determined to deliver quality products within given timelines and budgets

· Ability to plan while taking into consideration and integrating the various goals and circumstances of multiple key stakeholders

· Able to use Design For Manufacturing strategy

· Experience in thermoforming and composite materials desired

· Available to travel 25 to 50% of the time;
