JD Sweid Foods is one of the largest poultry and red meat further processors in Canada. We service both the retail and food service channels and offer high quality products that deliver on taste. With locations in Langley, BC and Waterloo, ON, we employ over 600 people nationally. We are currently looking to add to our team at our Langley facility:

QUALITY ASSURANCE MANAGER

GENERAL:

Reporting directly to the Director of Quality Assurance, the Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for strict adherence to food safety enhancement program, customer requirements, and all regulatory frameworks for the entire facility, ensuring that the processes needed for compliant safe quality foods are established, implemented and maintained. The QA Manager acts as the leading role in establishing and maintaining quality assurance standards, procedures and controls. The QA Manager provides strong leadership and direction to the food safety and quality policies and procedures, promotes the awareness of customer requirements. The QA Manager will be responsible for following established food safety and quality procedures. Work directly with production to schedule and control inspection activities and to enforce requirements, initiate corrective action for procedural product or process deficiencies. Provisions will be made to cover the absence of an employee in this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Manages the QA department, recruiting, training, coaching, counselling and disciplining employees, communicating job expectations, monitoring and appraising job performances, providing leadership and support that encourages teamwork, safety performance, personal responsibility and continuous improvement.
  • Leads the plant food safety and quality training programs, working in partnership with plant operations to establish procedures, standards and systems that are well designed and executed.
  • Maintains Quality Assurance Systems and overseeing FSEP programs to meet regulatory compliance and to ensure product quality and food safety, working with operating staff to ensure effective implementation and maintenance of process control measures and programs.
  • Provides technical support to Operations, Product Development and Business Development, collaborate with other members of management to develop new product and engineering designs, manufacturing and training methods.
  • Leads quality and food safety investigations as they arise and provide recommendations on improvements and/or corrective actions.
  • Updates job knowledge by studying trends in and developments in quality management, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, participating in professional organizations.

Food Safety & Quality Management

  • Work with QA staff to execute all required quality and food safety tests accurately and efficiently, determining operational and performance qualifications, measuring production, documenting evidence, ensuring manufacturing processes are in compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Manage customer quality assurance relationship, ensure customer standards are met, writing management/technical reports and customer correspondence as required.
  • Oversees the quality requirements of raw material with suppliers. Follow up on non-conformances.
  • Maintain facility’s certifications and regulatory approvals: SFCR, FSEP, SQF.
  • Oversees the recording, analysis and distribution of quality information, prepares quality documentation, reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends including failed processes, studies, corrective actions and re-validates.
  • Ensuring product conformance to specifications. Maintains and improves product quality by completing product, company, system, compliance and surveillance audits.
  • Providing technical support to Operations, Product Development and Business Development by contributing information and analyses to strategic plans and reviews, identifying and resolving problems, determining system improvements, implementing change.
  • Coordinate and perform CFIA, customer and JDS audits as needed.
  • Manage customer complaints.

Operational Growth & Development

  • Recruit, train, supervise, coach and lead QA staff to meet company core competency.
  • Support in training programs for relevant FSEP & Health Canada procedures, product quality requirements, equipment & process technology.
  • Contribute to the overall Health and Safety of yourself and all team members. Participate in JHSC initiatives and follow established policies as outlined in the Health and Safety policies.
  • Report all accidents, incidents and near misses to your Supervisor and a Member of the Health and Safety Committee.
  • All other reasonable duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science or other scientific area of study or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in the meat industry in a technical leadership capacity
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated competency in Safe Food for Canadian Regulations (SFCR), Health Canada and FSEP systems
  • Experience with internal and external auditing
  • Be flexible with working hours

  • Above average analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills in Excel and Word

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • HACCP Plan Development and Implementation required
  • Advanced HACCP-Verification
  • Validation and Auditing of FSEP System preferred
  • GFSI training
  • Animal Welfare
