Project Engineer Job at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
The Project Engineer reports administratively to the Project Delivery Manager and functionally to the Engineering Manager, Waster Services. The Project Engineer leads the delivery of the project’s design and engineering deliverables from a technical perspective.
- Analyzing and solving problems using standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or previously developed methods.
- Planning to achieve prescribed objectives.
- Making independent studies, analyzing, interpreting and concluding.
- Developing novel engineering techniques or modifying existing equipment, facilities, or processes.
- Estimating costs and assisting in the preparation of commercial/business proposals.
- Preparing complex reports and specifications.
- Giving presentations to customers and contributing to technical journals.
Education:
At a minimum, a Bachelors (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing
OR
Hold a membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
Experience:
- Scientist CSE 1 – 0-2 years’ experience
- Scientist CSE 2 - A few years related scientific working experience OR a PhD in Science.
- Some understanding of engineering codes and standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear processing facilities.
- Some understanding of radiation protection (RP) standards and CRL RP practices.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Eligible for PEO Professional designation or able to start the process therein.
- Good interpersonal and oral and technical writing skills are required to interact with team members, internal suppliers, operations’ representatives, external contractors, project stakeholders, CNL management, and client organization.
- General computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
- Some knowledge of CNL’s practices, organization and Quality Assurance processes.
- Developing and preparing technical specifications and work scopes.
- Assisting in the selection of design participants and in the award of design contracts.
- Participating in leading engineering surveillance activities and assessing the design in progress, including the review of design documents to verify that design requirements are met.
- Ensuring adequate independent (third party) technical review of the design.
- Participating in preparing submissions of key technical and safety-related documents to the Delegate Design Authority for the Chief Nuclear Engineer for review.
- Facilitating the transfer of specialized design knowledge to CNL.
- Assessing equipment options and making recommendations.
- Assisting the Project Team and Project Control Representative in developing project work packages, including deliverables, budgets and schedules.
- Participating in the preparing technical documents, work scopes and engineering surveillance plans, performing surveillance of design, construction and commissioning activities of suppliers, including participants.
- Identifying, assessing and initiating changes relative to the project scope statement in accordance with project change control.
- Interfacing with design participants, operations engineers, technical staff and nuclear operators to provide technical support during all phases of the project, as required in order to meet project objectives.

- This role is based out of CNL’s Chalk River site, however, subject to the terms of this agreement, your primary work location will be remote. Your role will require some regular and frequent attendance at the Chalk River site. The schedule and frequency will be determined by discussions with your manager as well as internal client and project needs. CNL may require you to travel from time to time, as necessary.
