About the Organization
Imhotep’s Legacy Academy ( ILA ) is a university-community partnership that seeks to improve the representation of African Canadians in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies and careers.

ILA’s Engaging African Nova Scotian Youth in Agriculture and Community Food Security Project, in partnership with the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs, the African Canadian Services Branch, the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, and Perennia, creates opportunities for youth via community food growing projects in several African Nova Scotian communities, with a goal to increase agri-food employment opportunities and develop agricultural entrepreneurship skills.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Provincial Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant is responsible for assisting office and program staff (the Engaging African Nova Scotian Youth in Agriculture and Community Food Security initiative and other projects) to ensure organizational effectiveness and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning and scheduling events and program activities.
  • Maintain ILA’s mailing and contact databases.
  • Procure materials required to restock science activity bins and kits; source and order office supplies/equipment.
  • Prepare written materials including reports, PowerPoint presentations, meeting minutes/notes, and routine correspondence.
  • Process invoices, cheque requisitions, journal entries, travel claims, deposit forms, purchase requisitions, payroll and benefits forms, and other staffing documents, ensuring that policies and procedures are strictly adhered to for the organization.
  • Other related duties, as required.

Note
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory Criminal (Vulnerable Sector) Background Checks and Child Abuse Register Checks. ILA will reimburse the successful candidate for these costs.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in person on campus.
Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

Required Qualifications
  • Diploma in a Business or Science related field with two (2) years of related experience.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage projects or multiple program activities, and set priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office applications and other office productivity software.
  • A general understanding of accounting concepts, e.g., debits and credits, chart of accounts, etc.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
