Employment Opportunity Mikisew Cree Prevention Worker

Mikisew Cree is seeking a prevention worker. The prevention worker is responsible for working directly with Mikisew Cree children, youth & families to support them in achieving stability and behavioral changes where safety issues are present. This role provides prevention and early intervention support to Mikisew children who are struggling with challenges that if left unaddressed, may result in children & youth being at risk for more intrusive child intervention response. This role mentors and monitors and connects families to appropriate resources to assist in keeping children and youth safe and improve their social and emotional outcomes. The prevention worker also engages with families towards the goal of strengthening them so that they remain a family unit and meet their children’s needs for safety, healing, and wellbeing.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in assessing the child/youth safety, risk, and wellbeing, while respecting the culture and unique circumstances of the Mikisew Family.
  • Comprehensive support plans & Cultural plans to promote behavioral changes and working from a strength’s perspective respecting the Cree/Dene culture.
  • Connecting all Mikisew children/ Youth in the different areas such as Fort Chipewyan, Fort Smith, Fort McMurray & Edmonton areas to appropriate supports/services.
  • Assisting Mikisew families in developing problem solving techniques and conflict resolution.
  • Meeting with the child/family regularly to conduct ongoing assessments of the family’s progress, and children/youth safety.
  • Support Mikisew families in addressing the areas that are barriers to effective parenting and family functioning.
  • Maintain accurate and relevant client records.
  • To maintain connections with Mikisew Elders, professional agencies and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Preference Registered member of Mikisew Cree First Nation
  • Degree or diploma in social worker or human services related field.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check, including vulnerable sector and Child Intervention record check (within 3 months upon hiring)
  • Valid class 5 drivers license, reliable transportation with 2 million liability insurance.
  • Working knowledge and experience with travel to and from Mikisew Cree First Nation home base Fort Chipewyan.
  • Knowledge & understanding of Mikisew Cree, culture and language would be an asset.
