Cornerstone Hydro Electric Concepts Association (CHEC) is a collaborative non-profit association currently supporting 15-member Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) in Ontario. By sharing experience, knowledge and resources, CHEC supports its members to remain as active members of their communities, deliver value to their shareholders, provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective electricity distribution to their customers, and prepare for the energy future.

Due to an upcoming retirement, CHEC is seeking a unique individual Utility specific Operational and Health and Safety expertise to lead CHEC’s Operations and Health and Safety portfolio.

CHEC provides extensive regulatory, health and safety, communication, human resource/labour relations and operational support and services as well as being a forum for members to work collaboratively to realize efficiencies of scale and share best practices.

Current members include: Centre Wellington Hydro Ltd., ERTH Power Corp., Fort Frances Power Corp., Grimsby Power, InnPower Corp., Lakefront Utilities Inc., Lakeland Power Distribution Ltd., Niagara–on- the-Lake Hydro, Orangeville Hydro Ltd., Ottawa River Power Corp., Renfrew Hydro Inc., Rideau St. Lawrence Distribution Inc., Tillsonburg Hydro, Wasaga Distribution Inc., and Wellington North Power Inc.

Position:

Operations and Health and Safety Specialist

Position Summary:

Informed by Cornerstone Hydro Electric Concept’s (CHEC) mission and vision statements and service values, the Operations and Health and Safety Specialist is an autonomous position that plays a critical role in supporting the CHEC members by leading CHEC’s Operations and Health and Safety portfolio providing assistance, guidance and alternative solutions related to the operational and health and safety issues associated with the operation of Local Distribution Companies (LDC’s)..

Key accountabilities include:

Leads CHEC’s Operations / Health and Safety portfolio

  • Liaises between all CHEC members on operations and health and safety matters.
  • Supports CHEC members by conducting onsite visits: crew inspections, investigations, health and safety meetings, operational and health and safety compliance reviews identifying and analyzing potential gaps and risks, and determines controls and measures to mitigate identified risks.
  • Provides recommendations on potential actions to ensure compliance and agility within the sector.
  • Develops, reviews, updates and maintains common operational and health and safety policies and procedures in conjunction with member volunteers.
  • Participates in, represents and advocates for CHEC and CHEC members on industry committees and/or stakeholder forums and presents consolidated views on behalf of members.
  • Facilitates and leads committee meetings and any associated working groups ensuring a collaborative and cohesive solutions-based approach.
  • Facilitates and provides relevant and timely operational and health and safety seminars and training to CHEC members.
  • Leads operations, and health and safety regulatory related Request for Proposals (RFP’s) as needed.

Work is executed remotely, in your home-based office with frequent travel to LDC sites, and other public / private facilities within Ontario.

  • A self-motivated individual with the ability to hold yourself accountable to meet various deadlines while working on multiple projects for various stakeholders.
  • Adept at project management, managing a diverse portfolio, and pay attention to detail.
  • Customer service oriented, with a high level of interpersonal understanding and skill, enabling successful outcomes for the projects you are assigned / identify.
  • A loyal employee and possess organizational awareness and commitment, which assists you in delivering results.
  • A team player, recognizing your place in the team with the ability to work with multiple stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Able to attend public and private facilities in compliance with Ontario’s vaccine mandates and the policies of various members and stakeholders.

You have:

  • Electrical Engineering Technician Diploma / Health & Safety Certification (Post-Secondary)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) accreditation an asset.
  • Demonstrated application of Industry related continuing education and certifications.
  • 10 + years’ progressive operational experience in the electrical distribution industry and/or a utility with a minimum of 3 + years at a senior operational level, and 3 + years’ oversight of the health and safety portfolio.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Electricity Act, Regulation 22/04, Electrical Utilities Safety Rules, Utility Work Protection Code (up to date), Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations with ability to translate and communicate all requirements to the regulated utility environment.
  • Clear criminal record – the position has access to significant sensitive, financial and confidential information.
  • A valid Class “G” driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to various member facilities and public meeting locations within Ontario.
  • Flexibility in work hours / extended hours when necessary, including overnight stays.
