About the Elgin County Railway Museum:

Established in 1988, and incorporated in 1989, the Elgin County Railway Museum is located in the historic 1913 Michigan Central Railroad Locomotive Shop. It is a not-for-profit, charitable organization with an elected Board of Directors, and over 115 members. The Museum’s mission is “To collect, preserve and interpret the railway heritage of Southwestern Ontario which will engage, educate and inspire local and global audiences”.

The City of St. Thomas is located in Southwestern Ontario in Elgin County. St. Thomas claimed the title of Railway Capital of Canada, thanks to its history as a North American railway hub with at least five different railroad companies steaming their way through the County in the early 1900s. The recently established tourism department has been branded Railway City Tourism in honour of this title. St. Thomas is also known for a famous railway tragedy—Jumbo the elephant, star of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, who was struck and killed by a train in 1885 in the city. A life-sized Jumbo monument erected on the centennial anniversary of the event greets visitors entering the city’s west end. St. Thomas also offers lively community theatre, beautiful parks and shopping in an indoor mall, and large plazas and in the historic downtown core. Visitors and locals can relax at friendly cafes, or by exploring charming and unique specialty shops, the local breweries or the Saturday Horton Farmers’ Market during the summer months. The City of St. Thomas and the communities of Elgin County also offer golfing, fine dining, wine tours and tasting, art exhibits, theatre and cultural events, hiking, biking, boating and close proximity to the sandy beaches in Port Stanley.
