The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

TITLE: LITERACY SUPPORT TEACHER / COACH P-6


JOB DESCRIPTION:


The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach will work with students, in small group intervention cycles, and work with teachers to improve instruction as a means of improving student learning.


The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach is expected to:

  • Provide mentoring support to teachers and principals within the framework established by the Nova Scotia Department Of Education And Early Childhood Development;
  • Work in classrooms with teachers to improve each teacher’s classroom-based instruction and assessment practices, and pedagogical and content knowledge;
  • Work in classrooms with students and teachers to support literacy development;
  • Create a literacy environment conducive to effective instruction;
  • Demonstrate (model) reading/learning strategies in classrooms;
  • Evaluate students’ literacy needs and collaborate with teachers and administrators to interpret, use assessment data to improve instruction, and problem solve;
  • Demonstrate (model) a range of assessment tools as a means to make sound decisions about student literacy needs as related to the curriculum and to instruction;
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to examine student work and monitor progress in order to support teacher reflection and action;
  • Assist classroom teachers with analysis of formal and informal assessment data on their students to determine student response to instruction;
  • Assist teachers with planning, sequencing, and scaffolding of instruction;
  • Design and provide daily, in-class, small group and/or individualized instruction to students selected for literacy support;
  • Be an active participant on the Teaching Support Team to provide input on students’ literacy development and monitor student progress;
  • Attend meetings and on-going professional development with the regional TCRCE Literacy Team;
  • Develop and maintain long range and daily instructional plans;
  • Use a variety of assessment strategies, including completing daily on-going observations and informal assessment collection to inform instruction.

Qualifications/Experience


  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
  • Experience with Guided Reading/Small-group instruction;
  • Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction; teaching using the workshop framework at the P-6 level;
  • Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the classroom, Region, and/or provincial levels(s) would be preferred;
  • Experience working as Coach/Mentor is an asset;
  • Training in Early Literacy Support considered an asset;
  • Certification as a trained Reading Recovery® teacher is considered an asset.

The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach shall have the following competencies:

  • Coaches need to be viewed and embraced as Tier 1 leaders with a specialty in their area of expertise.
  • The ability to deliver literacy support to identified students on a daily basis;
  • The ability to apply knowledge and experience in the design and delivery of individual and small group early literacy instruction;
  • The ability to apply knowledge of current effective and equitable literacy assessment and instructional practices;
  • The ability to plan instructional goals and designated outcomes for all students and to clearly communicate those to learners;
  • The desire and ability to work in classrooms alongside teacher colleagues and contribute collaboratively as a team member;
  • The ability to utilize current technologies to perform work related procedures including data collection;
  • The ability to work collaboratively as a contributing team member;
  • The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity and culturally relevant pedagogy;
  • The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
  • The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality;
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills;
  • Employ effective coaching skills;
  • Coach teachers in effective instructional strategies in a variety of content areas;
  • Use effective strategies for differentiating instruction;
  • Exhibit knowledge of outcomes-based curriculum.

As part of the requirements of this job the successful candidate will be required to substitute on an as needed basis in schools. This assignment is subject to change and the successful candidate for this position will be reassigned to a classroom position if necessary.
