Nature of the Position

Under the general direction of the Chief Building Official, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer I receives, verifies, and investigates District of Sechelt bylaw complaints and infractions, reviews businesses for conformance to the business licensing bylaw, and functions as the animal control officer.

The successful applicant will investigate bylaw complaints and infractions and ensure businesses operate in compliance with all District of Sechelt bylaws. The successful applicant will assess complaints to determine whether a bylaw has been infracted and provide written communication relating to bylaw infractions and compliance. The Bylaw Enforcement Officer will initiate enforcement to address the violation, which may include the issuing of tickets and preparation of files for the Screening Officer and/or presentation as evidence in court.

Essential Competencies

The successful applicant will have completed enforcement courses such as Justice Institute of British Columbia J1 or equivalent and have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in bylaw enforcement, policing, or the investigative/protective services field. Applicants must hold a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with clean abstract.

This role requires the incumbent to possess a calm demeanor and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills. Other requirements include the ability effectively prioritize workload and exercise sound judgement. The successful applicant will have strong conflict resolution and interpersonal skills as well as the ability work well members of the public. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook is required.

Working Conditions

This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 9, $33.24 – $36.93 per hour, plus an attractive benefits package. The hours of work are 35 hours per week spread over 4 days per week. Flexibility is required to work evenings and weekends when required.
