The Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for performing day-to-day andrology laboratory procedures including, but not limited to, preparing specimens for ART procedures, diagnostic testing and record keeping, as well as handling basic administrative tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Preparing semen samples for IUI and releasing samples for insemination
• Performing semen analysis and other diagnostic tests (manual and computer assisted semen analyses, anti-sperm antibody (ASA) test, morphology staining and assessment, DNA fragmentation analysis, vitality and leacoscreen tests)
• Cryopreservation and storage of patient samples
• Receiving frozen samples from sperm banks and maintaining associated documentation
• Documenting patient results using andrology forms, updating databases and eIVF (EMR software).
• Maintaining sample logbooks and tracking frozen sample inventory
• Routine monitoring of the performance of critical laboratory equipment
• Preparing samples and associated documentation for transport
• Performing and documenting quality control and assurance programs
• Operating, maintaining and performing basic troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments to ensure optimal function
• Tracking department inventory and assisting in the procurement of supplies
• Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of Biological Safety Cabinets
• Maintaining cleanliness of the lab; ensuring a clean, tidy and organized work area
• Performing daily environmental monitoring
• Covering for Andrology Administrative Assistant when needed (accepting patient samples, creating labels, billing orders not covered by OHIP, creating and scheduling new patients in eIVF, logging andrology procedures and consenting patient samples for research).
• Following safety rules, health regulations and preventive measures in the performance of laboratory duties and responsibilities
• Upholding the professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy, use confidential information appropriately, and maintain the confidentiality and security of all information related to patients, staff and the business of Create Fertility Centre
• Other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

• Completion of Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician Certificate or equivalent
• Previous experience in ART laboratory of at least one or more years preferred
• Good understanding of medical terminology required
• Computer data entry experience required
