We are seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Interpreter who demonstrates our values of compassion, accountability, responsiveness and empowerment; to our clients, families and each other.
Wesley Interpretation Services is dedicated to improving access to services for limited and non-English speaking communities through cost-effective, high quality language services. When you work as a self-employed interpreter, you are working with one of the most vulnerable and at-risk populations in the Hamilton community. A high level of proficiency, and well-established professional boundaries, are required for this role as you will work with clients, case managers and community partners.
Wesley Interpretation Services offers interpretation in a number of languages and is seeking additional interpreters in the following languages:
- Amharic
- Assyrian
- Bhutanese
- Croatian
- Dari/Farsi
- Dinka
- French
- Hausa
- Italian
- Karen
- Kirundi or Rundi
- Kurdish
- Lingala
- Maay (Somali dialect)
- Nuer
- Pashto
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Somali
- Spanish
- Swahili
- Tigrinya
- Urdu
- Ukrainian
- Vietnamese
- Yoruba
In context, Wesley Interpretation Services is seeking a wide variety of different languages, so candidates that speak other languages are welcome to apply.
In this position you will be working as a self-employed agent. You will be contacted for interpretation assignments on an on-call basis; there is no set amount of hours per week.
Please note: only candidates living in Hamilton, and the greater Hamilton area will be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide on-site interpretation at multiple locations in the Hamilton area.
- Provide interpretation services for home visits, medical appointments, counselling appointments, and events.
- Provide telephone interpretation.
- Message relay.
- Translation of documents, i.e. medical forms, application forms, etc.
What you will bring:
- Must have previous experience working as an interpreter.
- Certified interpretation certificate and/or education in interpretation is an asset.
- Must be able to verbally speak the language fluently. Written fluency is an asset.
- Familiarization with social service agencies and the vulnerable population is an asset.
- Ability to deal with sensitive issues and work with the vulnerable population.
- Ability to access and use telecommunication technology.
- Ability to provide accurate verbal interpretation to both client and staff member.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries.
- Committed to ongoing professional development.
- Ability to arrive to assignments on time in Hamilton, ON
- Recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate is required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Human Resources. In the event that successful candidates are unable to get their COVID-19 vaccination, completion of an educational session and weekly antigen testing to provide a negative result will be required.
