Our Team:
A dedicated team of museum professionals working with community partners to uncover and share our community’s stories. We work with colleagues from across departments to connect contemporary issues and stories from our past. We work hard to ensure our visitors have a meaningful experience from the moment they enter the door to the time they leave the gift shop.

Apply your Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
You will monitor the work of all staff and volunteers assigned to support programming and exhibits.
You will establish and update a consolidated 3-year exhibit plan for the museum galleries.
You will create new, relevant, and culturally meaningful exhibitions, ensuring they are interpreted from multiple voices, inclusive, and not told from a single narrative.
You will supervise day-to-day client services and operations, including admissions, gift shop, food services, and building opening and closing.
You will develop an annual plan for long-term exhibit renewal projects and supervise museum galleries and long-term exhibit maintenance and upkeep in collaboration with facilities management and other supervisors.
You will identify and advise on research needs, supervise program research, research when planning interpretive activities, presenting special events, preparing materials, responding to inquiries, and speaking to the public.
You will lead teams to develop and guide key themes, interpretive messages, and storylines, ensuring integration, including presentation in galleries, and that Indigenous and BIPOC knowledge and perspectives are represented in the museum’s programs.
You will work in partnership with members of the community to draw on their knowledge and expertise and foster and create a culture of inclusion and reconciliation.
You will monitor operating budgets for exhibits, programs, education, and student hiring.
You will assist the Manager to prepare grant applications, draft and negotiate agreements, surveys, reports, and museum policies and procedures.
You will provide program content for public communications, marketing, and social media, represent the museum on committees and at public events and the media as required, and conduct exhibit lectures and tours.
You will work with Friends of Waterloo Region Museum to support programs and special events.
You will respond to inquiries and complaints from the public.

Apply Your Experience at the Region of Waterloo:
Knowledge of program development and delivery in an informal learning environment (e.g., museum interpretation, exhibits, education, special events, outreach), three-dimensional interpretive and interactive exhibit design, museum curatorial practices, and historical research methods, normally acquired through a master’s degree in museum studies or equivalent education, plus progressively responsible related experience.
Understanding of the evolving nature and responsibility of museums in representing diverse and inclusive narratives and perspectives into programming and exhibits through demonstrated experience, including curating BIPOC or Indigenous exhibits.
Knowledge of local history and ability to stay current with best practices in museum exhibit planning and development.
Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, collective agreements, and related legislation.
Ability to develop programming to ensure themes are relevant, engaging, and align with the museum’s mandate and strategic goals.
Ability to draw out varied themes and ideas to support multi-purpose programming and reach broad audiences.
Analytical, organization, problem solving, and continuous improvement skills to prioritize work for self and others, analyse, and apply policies, procedures, and standards, participate in strategic planning, and to handle conflicting priorities, seasonal events, interruptions, and deadlines.
Leadership, human relations, communication, and presentation skills to supervise, train, develop, motivate, and support staff, represent museum programs at special events, develop and maintain partnerships with community stakeholders and participate as an effective team member.
Ability to read and write correspondence, reports, library resources, forms, work schedules, articles, records, evaluations, grant applications, correspondence, proposals, promotional content, and plans.
Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office.
Ability to work some weekends as part of a regular management rotation to provide on-site supervision and respond to weekend/evening site emergencies.
Ability to travel within and outside Waterloo Region.
Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
