As the Fisheries Ecology Supervisor of the Lake Erie Management Unit, you will lead a team of experienced technical professionals in delivering, planning, coordinating, and directing activities related to fisheries/ecosystem assessment and research. In this role, you will also supervise the assessment of fish stocks and provide advice to managers on the status of fish stocks in the lake. Additionally, you will liaise with other agencies, stakeholders, and work units within the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to ensure that our fisheries/ecosystem assessment and research activities are coordinated and aligned with broader ministry objectives.

The Lake Erie Management Unit shares resource management responsibility with U.S. States, federal governments, and tribal authorities through the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission. Our team develop fisheries management objectives with our stakeholders and partners. Moreover, we work with the commercial fishing industry and recreational anglers across the Lake Erie basin.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As the Fisheries Ecology Supervisor, you will:

  • Supervise technical, professional, and clerical staff, lead the implementation, design, and review of existing field surveys, and supervise the assessment of fish stocks.
  • Manage the implementation and delivery of science research and monitoring programs in partnership or coordination with government and non-government organizations to analyze natural resource ecosystems, and capacity, and develop re-establishment strategies.
  • Prepare scientific and technical reports and make recommendations based on data analysis to managers regarding resource management options.
  • Liaise with other agencies, stakeholders, and work units within the ministry to ensure coordinated and effective implementation of programs and services.
  • Develop health and safety plans, train staff, and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations as well as ministry and divisional policies and protocols.
  • Support an inclusive team by providing technical, administrative, and operational direction to staff, assigning and coordinating work, evaluating performance, identifying staff training needs, and escalating employee relations matters.


How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • This position requires occasional travel across the province. The successful candidate must possess a valid Class G driver's licence or an equivalent licence recognized by the Province of Ontario.


Leadership and Management Skills

  • You have demonstrated leadership skills to build effective teams by valuing diverse input and experiences to deliver results for resource management programs.
  • You can lead and manage change by nurturing working relationships with internal staff and external communities with varying views and opinions.
  • You have the ability to learn, or have demonstrated experience applying, human resources practices, policies, directives and collective agreements in relation to recruitment, training and development, and labour relations.
  • You possess strong supervisory skills to assign/direct work of staff and determine priorities and expectations.
  • You have demonstrated the leadership behaviors, attributes and mindsets to lead the OPS into the future.


Technical Knowledge and Expertise

  • You have the knowledge of aquatic ecology, fisheries/resources management, and assessment methodology to lead and support international multidisciplinary groups, and biologist staff, and to brief senior management and other stakeholders.
  • You have the knowledge of, and experience in, sampling design and data analysis/interpretation including familiarity with computer systems.
  • You have extensive knowledge of the impacts of environmental change, anthropogenic stress, and exploitation on fisheries.
  • You have professional knowledge consistent with high-level acceptance in the scientific community, and sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge to act as expert scientific support for the manager when dealing with outside agencies, stakeholders and the general public and mentor to technical staff.
  • You have the understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and committee structure with certification to represent management.


Communication and Stakeholders Management Skills

  • You have demonstrated communication, consultation and negotiation skills to discuss technical issues with, and present information to senior management, staff and stakeholders.
  • You have proven relationship management skills to promote ministry programs and gain support from various agencies, stakeholders and the public.
  • You have extensive communication skills to prepare written correspondence, reports, research papers, briefing notes and more.
