Job Summary

Dalhousie University, under the leadership of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, administers over $200M annually in research funding. As part of the Office of Research Services (ORS) and reporting to the Director, Strategic Initiatives and Programs, the Indigenous Research Facilitator advises on and assists the Dalhousie Indigenous research community (Indigenous researchers and students, and researchers focusing on Indigenous research) with funding applications to internal funding opportunities and external Canadian funding agencies and various other granting bodies within and outside Canada, and provides support in the development of research ethics submissions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Indigenous research community to provide expert advice and assistance in the preparation of competitive grant applications.
  • Respond to research funding inquiries from the Indigenous research community, as well as from researchers, Department Heads, Associate Deans Research, Deans, etc.
  • Provide guidance to the Indigenous research community on research funding programs and opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of research ethics submissions concerning Indigenous research.
  • Design and deliver outreach sessions that help improve research application preparation and writing, and coordinate guest speakers, mentoring and peer review to improve draft applications.
  • Ensure that research applications comply with University and funding agency policies and procedures, and liaise with financial administrators to confirm that financial requirements are met.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree plus approximately five years' related experience in research administration or related environment (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Knowledge and experience of Indigenous culture, traditions and values is essential, as well as knowledge of Indigenous research processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, judgement and strong organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Tact, sensitivity and diplomacy, and well-developed interpersonal skills are essential.

Assets

  • Knowledge of the university research funding environment (with a strong awareness of Indigenous research funding programs), research funding agencies and practices, and functions related to research administration.
  • Strong understanding of historical and contemporary Indigenous contexts in Canada with a deep respect for Indigenous cultural diversity is required.
  • Understanding of human research ethics in the context of Indigenous research.
