The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

CLSI is now accepting applications for a term Database Administrator as a member of our Systems Technology Department. Reporting to the Systems Technology Manager, the Database Administrator functions as a key resource for building organization-wide strategic and centralized reporting. The incumbent works directly with subject matter experts to evaluate business processes, explore available data, and identify organizational metrics. This position will focus on the technical skills of data handling and data distribution throughout the facility.

Flexibility of work schedule will be given with regards to remote and on-site work dependent upon location of applicant and arrangement with hiring manager. Our team currently has flexible work agreements, and we are open to exploring ongoing remote work options with candidates.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementing changes in database operations and ensuring data is readily available to end-users
  • Minimizing downtime of databases and ensuring data provided is accurate
  • Managing database access and keeping stored data up-to-date
  • Providing training, feedback, and support to users on the usage of data provided
  • Ensuring that the database is adequately backed up so that vital information can be retrieved in case of accidental loss or security breach
  • Monitoring performance and providing information on ways to improve the authenticity and security of data
  • Maintaining the efficiency of the database by providing regular checks and data updates
  • Integration of multiple data driven systems and aggregation of disparate data sources
  • Building database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end user’s specialized role
  • Designing and implementing databases in accordance to end-user’s information needs and views

Qualifications:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree in a professional technical discipline
  • A minimum of five years of related experience in a database administrator or equivalent position
  • Proven working experience as a Database Administrator
  • Hands-on experience with database standards and end user applications
  • Excellent knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, integrity and SQL
  • Strong familiarity with database design, documentation and coding
  • Previous experience with DBA case tools (frontend/backend) and third-party tools
  • Familiarity with programming languages API
  • Problem solving skills and ability to think algorithmically
  • Experience with Data Warehousing, Aggregation and Integration of data systems
  • Experience with Data Analytics tools and toolsets
  • Working knowledge of reporting systems and techniques for user-based data consumption and manipulation

Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
