The Mustard Seed is seeking a Community Services Officer - Social Services who will contribute to the work of the Community Impact Centres through relationship building, program development, and community engagement. The Community Services Officer - Social Services will be primarily based out of our downtown location but will also provide auxiliary support to other Community Impact Centre locations while aiding in the development of new programs, support of existing programs, and working with both youth and adult populations. The Community Services Officer – Social Services will provide an identifiable and visible presence within each Centre, that optimizes safety, builds relationships, and values people.

Position Type: Seasonal Employment Full time (Approx. June-August)
Hourly Rate: $17.00 hourly

Schedule: 35 hours per week
Reporting to: Community Impact Centre Manager
Number of Positions to Fill: 1


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Community Services Officer - Social Services will participate in front line duties such as:
  • Supervise building access to the Downtown Community Impact Centre, and coordinate the loading of the afternoon shuttle bus service to the Foothills Campus
  • Monitor guest activities within the Community Impact Centres and around the Campus buildings, providing crisis intervention as required
  • Provide a visible presence within each Community Impact Centre, recognize and respond to opportunities to optimize safety, and build community
  • Contribute to the development of new programs in Community Impact Centres
  • Aid in facilitation of adult programming as well as youth and family programming (ie. Back to School Backpack Campaigns, Summer Camps, etc.)
  • Greet and ensure donors are treated with excellence and appreciation
  • Attend meetings and training as assigned
  • Keep all client information confidential
  • Perceiving and quickly responding to crises within the Centre
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Empathy for the poor and a desire for a greater understanding concerning poverty and justice issues in an urban center
  • Strong computer, communication, and conflict resolution skills
  • Interest and experience working with the homeless population of Calgary
  • Strong team building and leadership skills
  • Experience with and interest in working with children and families
  • Valid Driver’s License, Driver’s Abstract and Vulnerable Sector Check is required

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests of all age ranges;
  • This position is often fast-paced, and requires a focused amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve;
  • Evenings and weekend hours may be required to accommodate the hours of the Community Impact Centres;
  • Exposure to highly intense situations, including traumatic incidents (i.e. overdoses)
  • Interaction with vulnerable clients who may be under the influence of harmful substances.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
