The Saskatchewan Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, Provincial Protective Services Branch is designed to ensure the protection of people, natural resources and infrastructure. Currently the Branch is seeking two skilled and energetic individuals for the position of Community Safety Officer, Wascana Centre. Community Safety Officers patrol Wascana Centre on foot and bicycle, along with traditional patrol vehicles, to help create a space that is safe, healthy and enjoyable for all visitors. The Community Safety Officer program emphasizes community engagement and helps create an environment of safety and wellbeing in Wascana Centre with officers on hand to answer questions and provide assistance to all park patrons.

Reporting to the Manager, the Community Safety Officer will:

  • Enforce any statute, law, bylaw or regulation within the jurisdiction of Wascana Centre listed in their Special Constable (S/Cst) appointment under The Police Act, 1990 from the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety. This includes traffic enforcement;
  • Attend and investigate "not in progress" theft or mischief under $5,000 complaints, and assist the Regina Police Service when requested;
  • Perform routine patrol duties and checks on all buildings within the park on foot, bicycle and/or in a vehicle to control traffic and crowds, to direct parking, to deter vandalism, and to assist in correcting public behaviors while establishing a positive rapport with the public and other partner organizations;
  • Attend to deal with and mediate disputes, protests, address complaints, assist with collisions or incidents and any unusual circumstances arising within the Wascana Centre boundaries;
  • Report all criminal offences to the Regina Police Service and ensure preservation of evidence relating to an incident or occurrence; and
  • Appear and give evidence in court when required.

Prior to being hired as a Community Safety Officer, a candidate will be required to:

  • Produce a valid certificate in Standard First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Level C;
  • Produce a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 driver's license;
  • Produce a driver’s abstract obtained within the previous three months which demonstrates a safe and responsible driving record; and
  • Have a satisfactory criminal records check in accordance with the Government of Saskatchewan Criminal Records Check Policy.

Once hired, you will be required to attend and successfully pass the Sheriff Officer Physical Abilities Test (SOPAT) with an elapsed time of six (6) minutes or less and complete the Saskatchewan Community Safety Officer Induction Course, or equivalent training. You must also receive and maintain a Special Constable Appointment which includes a requirement to meet the standards for the Saskatchewan Police College in Control Tactics, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Spray and Defensive Baton, and maintain this qualification every three (3) years.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position are obtained through relevant work experience in the law enforcement or justice system environments and may be combined with relevant education in criminal/human justice or human science programs. The ability to speak multiple languages will be considered an asset.

Community Safety Officers work shift work, including evenings and weekends.
