Overview

The Communications Associate supports the Director and the Corporate Communications & Marketing team in evaluating, developing and implementing external and internal corporate communication strategies and programs to fulfill Council term goals, corporate programs and objectives through specialized planning, communications, marketing research and writing. The role is focused primarily on the City’s social media plan and objectives, as well as other communication functions as required.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop, create, and publish relevant, high-quality content for all social media channels, and on the City’s website and intranet.
  • Support the development and implementation of communication campaigns, media relations, engagement, and other functions as required.
  • Create, curate, and manage all published content (images, video, written, audio), and assist in maintaining an organized file structure for digital/visual assets.
  • Implement and manage a social media content editorial calendar to coordinate content and specific timely campaigns.
  • Work with departments to identify opportunities for social media content and implement accordingly.
  • Create and implement paid strategies for online campaigns (e.g. boosting posts, creating ads).
  • Monitor and engage with social media followers with input from departments as required, and reporting results on social media engagement and measures of success.
  • Ensure key messages and content adheres to the City brand standards.
  • Support the City's official Emergency Communications plan and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) by disseminating information to the public and others as required.
  • Other communications and marketing duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and audience demographics.
  • Experience sourcing and managing social media content development, and an awareness of emerging trends and tools.
  • Sound knowledge of communications planning principles, practices, techniques and methods as they relate to the work performed.
  • A creative team player with the confidence to lead and support other employees when necessary in the development of social media content.
  • Ability to prioritize and practice excellent time management, and meet deadlines while working in a high-pressure environment.
  • Proven ability to perform assigned duties under minimal supervision, while working within a diverse and skilled team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to operate at a high level of proficiency with the City’s social media channels, as well as standard operating software (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and the City’s enterprise document management system.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of a university degree or college program in a related field of study such as communications, marketing or journalism.
  • A minimum of two years experience in an applicable social media, communications, marketing or journalism role is preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.

Salary Range:
$66,185-$82,731

Hours of Work:
8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, on a compressed work week, though variations to this schedule may be required.
