Job Description

Camp Leader

The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is a registered not-for-profit organization, in Sidney BC. This aquarium features local species of fish & invertebrates and strives to be a catalyst for building a healthy and sustainable Salish Sea Bioregion, through learning & engagement.

Opportunity: The Camp Leader reports directly to the Director of Learning & Communications. They will ensure that a high quality of visitor experience is provided. Dates of employment: May 1 – September 1, 2023. Rate: $18.00/hr.

The primary role of the Camp Leader is to:

  • Oversee and lead summer day campers through hands-on marine biology related activities including beach surveys, scavenger hunts, games and crafts. (Barnacle Buddies, 4-6 yrs old, Salish Sea School, 7-11 yrs old)
  • Create new and engaging camp content
  • Provide & maintain a safe and positive exploration (in the Centre and on boats & beaches)
  • Respect & follow the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve guidelines as laid out in our license
  • Assist in teaching curriculum-based school programs and informal public programs

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Expected Qualifications

The successful candidate should have the following skills:

  • Experience in customer service & working directly with children
  • An understanding of the biological/environmental sciences (including the flora and fauna of the Salish Sea) either through practical experience or formal education
  • Experience teaching/guiding children in an outdoor setting is an asset
  • Experience with public programming and interpretation is an asset
  • Proven ability to problem solve & make decisions based on inclusion and safety
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills
  • Creativity and energy to share
  • Valid Occupational First Aid First Aid Certification Level 1 and CPR (child) or willingness to acquire it prior to employment
