Position: Behaviour Support Worker, Permanent Full-Time or Fixed Term, up to 80 hours/bi-weekly Days, Evenings and Weekends.

Location: Guelph, Ontario

Wage Rate: $21.97 Hourly - $27.60 hourly (determined by relevant experience) (Wages include the Ontario Government’s $3.00/hour Permanent Compensation Enhancement)

Job Summary:

The Behavioural Support Worker – 2 works as a professional within a clinical multidisciplinary team that follows a biopsychosocial model of intervention for children, youth and adults with complex developmental, physical and emotional challenges. They assist with household management tasks and essential activities of daily living in accordance with the care/service plan of each supported individual. They consider the preferences, comfort and safety of multiple stakeholders (the individual, family and care partners) in the provision of all supports. A significant role of the Behavioural Support Worker - 2 is to implement behaviour support plans and to support individuals who require enhanced behaviour supports.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Behavioural Support Workers 2 will:

  • Assisting and advocating for the client needs with internal and external contacts:
    • prepare and maintain records of primary client progress and services performed, reporting changes in supported individual condition to manager or coordinator;
    • participate in case reviews, consult with the team supporting the individual, evaluate their needs and plan for continuing services;
    • Depending on needs for staffing at the location, full time workers will attend doctor appointments with supported individuals as required.
  • Provide formal and informal mentorship and training to new employees, part time workers and volunteers, upholding a positive image for Hopewell and promoting adherence to organizational policies and practices;
  • Ensure all documentation is complete and accurate at the end of each shift;
  • Work with the Senior Behaviour Therapist in data collection reporting, completing data sheets and advising on any new or concerning behaviours being presented by supported individuals;
  • Act as lead during shifts, for example by; being a main contact for parents or family members, ensuring activity schedules are followed, behaviour support plans are followed and medication is administered.
  • Ensure that each person receiving support is provided with the necessary support and guidance to co-create an Individual Support Plan (ISP):
    • Provide people we support with the resources and opportunity to achieve the outcomes of their ISP;
    • Full-time workers will work with Coordinators and Managers to ensure that regular review, documentation and follow up occurs with individuals and their families regarding meeting identified goals/outcomes.

All Behavioural Support Workers will:

  • Support individuals to live independently, encourage and engage individuals in meaningful activities such as being involved in leisure, recreational or work activities. For example:
    • Provide individuals with communication assistance, typing their correspondence or obtaining information on their behalf;
    • Observe, assess, and report changes in individuals’ behaviours, physical abilities and activities.
  • Support independence with daily living programs (toileting, feeding, grooming etc.):
    • Instruct, advise or support individuals on managing household cleanliness, grooming hygiene, nutrition, and other personal care needs;
    • Perform housekeeping duties, such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes or dishes, or running errands;
    • Provide transportation to individuals via association or public transit.
  • Maintain knowledge of current best practices in the field of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) through training.
    • Provide direct and indirect client interventions based on empirically sound principals of ABA;
    • Follow and implement all Behaviour Support Plans including completion of data collection, setting up the environment and reporting to Senior Behaviour Therapist.
  • Provide personal care supports according to directions on the established care plan or best practice:
    • Possess and demonstrate knowledge of First Aid, CPR, CPI, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, fire prevention and safety procedures and other areas as deemed necessary by the association.
    • Perform healthcare-related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs, dispensing medication, as directed by a primary care physician, pharmacist or other regulated health care professional;
    • Be familiar with and follow medication procedures and manage medication as per protocols:
    • Receive and properly execute the training received on:
  • G-tube feeding which is individual specific
  • Medication dispensing


  • Demonstrate effective communication skills:
  • Effectively use the communication log to record necessary information to be shared with all team members;
  • Professionally communicate in writing and in person with other team members, supported individuals, family members and community partners: demonstrating respect and interest in other’s opinions and insights


Qualifications & Experience/Special Requirements:

  • Work flexible hours within a variety of settings as required by the changing needs of the program and the people we support;
  • When required, must be able to undertake lifting of people following guidelines for proper back care, lifting and transferring as required by the program;
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities, dual diagnoses, and complex behavioural needs;
  • University or college degree/diploma in a relevant field;
  • Must have valid class G driver's license.
