Position

The Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, and Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone is inviting applications for a Full-time Academic Intensivist at the Assistant Professor level, with expertise in bioethics and advanced training in health research methods, to be based at the E. Garner King General Systems Intensive Care/Trauma and Burns Unit at the Walter C. McKenzie Health Sciences Centre of the University of Alberta Hospitals.

The Department of Critical Care Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 7 Full-Time and 6 Special-Continuing Academic Faculty and over 60 Clinical Faculty, across two teaching and three community Alberta Health Services’ operated hospitals (covering ~ 127 adult ICU beds in 8 ICUs) in the city of Edmonton. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College training program in Critical Care Medicine and overseas the ICU training of numerous rotating specialist programs. Research in the Department spans a wide spectrum from basic science and translational work through health services research and clinical trials across all aspects of the practice of Critical Care Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

The selected candidate will be expected to develop and lead an innovative investigator-initiated research program and facilitate collaborative research across the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department of Critical Care Medicine. The selected candidate will be expected to foster collaboration with national (e.g., Canadian Critical Care Trials Group) and international research groups. The candidate is expected to apply for external salary and operating research support (i.e., Canadian Institutes of Health Research) to further expand the Department’s research capacity and impact. The candidate will be expected to contribute to academic teaching and to supervise and mentor clinical learners, graduate students, and emerging faculty.

Qualifications include an MD with certification in Critical Care Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or possession of a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, formal training in bioethics, formal research training in epidemiology and health research methods (i.e., Graduate Studies Program [Masters or PhD]) and a proven record of academic achievement demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications (i.e., achieving at least 15 peer-reviewed publications to date, with the majority as first or senior author), research awards and potential for success at grant funding applications.

The candidate must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC or FRCSC, possess a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Remuneration will be fee-for-service provided through 8-14 clinical service weeks in the E. Garner King General Systems Intensive Care/Trauma and Burns Unit at the Walter C. McKenzie Health Sciences Centre of the University of Alberta Hospitals. The candidate will be expected to consider a future alternative funding arrangement termed the Academic Medicine Health Services Plan (AMHSP).
