POSITION SUMMARY
Working within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) The Halq'eméylem Language Teacher is responsible for teaching students how to speak, understand, and write Seabird Islands’ traditional language – Halq'eméylem. This teacher is an unrelenting advocate for language revitalization and works with staff and administration to promote the language throughout the school. You will be a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching team, liaising with other professionals, students, family members, and community to provide students with holistic, culturally focused education. We are a Group One K-12 Independent school located 1 kilometer from Agassiz, BC on the beautiful Fraser River, 120 km east of Vancouver. We have an expected student enrollment of 185 students housed in the main school (K-8) and in the adjacent high school.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Instruction

  • Teach students Halq'eméylem focusing on oral language acquisition.
  • Provide instruction in Halq'eméylem literature and Stó: lō culture.
  • Provide engaging lessons/activities to help students partner in revitalizing the language.
  • Develop student understanding and appreciation of traditional culture Halq'eméylem language.
  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities focused on revitalization of the language.
  • Create positive educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Create projects designed to enhance the understanding of the traditional language.
  • Preparation of report cards and progress reports.
  • Referring attendance and behavior concerns to administration.
  • Implement a home reading program that encourages reading at home for enjoyment.
  • Mandatory participation in professional development days and activities.
  • Instruct and deliver of curriculum in keeping with the BC Ministry of Education Integrated.
  • Pursue a variety of methodology in teaching and instructing students, including lectures, demonstrations, and discussions.
  • Ensure that instruction meets the learning and development needs of a variety of students. Therefore, individualizing and adapting materials and processes to enhance student understanding at their required level.
  • Develop a lesson plan and curriculum preparation, including year plan preparation.
  • Undertake effective classroom management strategies.

Attendance, Assessment and Reporting

  • Review, analyze, evaluate and report on student academic, social and emotional growth. Assessment of schoolwork, projects and exam oversight. Evaluate each student’s performance, knowledge and skills and meet all reporting and assessment deadlines.
  • Take and report on attendance of students.
  • Prepare report cards and progress reports.
  • Refer attendance and behavior concerns to the administration. Meetings with the administration as required to address any emerging issues.

Growth and Learning

  • Participate actively in teacher evaluations and acting on areas for improvement or professional development.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

General duties

  • Develop resource packages, outlines, and prescribed learning outcomes or as outlined by school administration. Delivering the Minimum Instructional Hours as outlined in the contract.
  • Consistently meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Participate in initiatives to ensure individual students have participated in mandatory schoolwork catch-up sessions.
  • Participate in PLC’s when space/opportunity permits.
  • Mandatory attendance at staff meetings and school events.
  • Abiding by all policies of Seabird Island Community School, the BC Ministry of Education, Independent Schools Branch and Seabird Island Band.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Seabird Island Community School Teacher Code of Conduct.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, Director or the Executive Director.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in education
  • Current practicing British Columbia (BC) Certified Teacher qualifications
  • Solid knowledge of and demonstrated ability in addressing a wide range of academic, social, emotional and behavioral needs of children of intermediate ages.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is required.
  • Experience working with First Nations children and the community is required.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
