St. Mary’s Home is a not-for-profit charitable organization serving the Ottawa area and beyond. SMH has continuously and responsively served pregnant youth in Ottawa since 1933. Specialized residential and community support services are provided to marginalized young pregnant women (ages 12-25), young parents and their children. The approach is holistic, grounded in a strong commitment to strengthen and build upon the personal resilience of each individual.

1. NIGHT PROGRAM FACILITATOR

  • Welcomes and orients new resident/participant to the residence
  • Support participant around evening/bath time/bedtime routine as directed
  • Offer respite to new moms especially during the first few weeks following delivery
  • Provide breast-feeding support and/or bottle sterilising in the first weeks following delivery
  • Night checks throughout the night, supporting and monitoring participants adherence to safe sleep
  • Support new parents with laundry
  • Complete all tasks within EMHware, and review parent profiles to ensure they are up to date
  • Facilitate formal and/or informal programs for parents to participate in at the residence
  • Additional duties as assigned by SMH as required

2. PARENTING SUPPORT FACILITATOR

  • Welcomes and orients new participants to the residence
  • Primarily work as parent support on the “floor” during assigned shifts
  • Supports parents in integrating the Parenting Readiness and Parenting Program daily
  • Actively promote positive parent-infant interactions; including parent-infant play and attachment
  • Support parents with their direct baby care skills; teaches parents to understand their infants’ emotional cues
  • Support parents to develop a routine for themselves and their infant/s and support parents to develop a Parenting Lifestyle
  • When possible participate in Residential Client Service Meetings and Residential House Meeting
  • Commit time and energy towards supporting positive residential dynamics through activities, such as, crafts, recreation, celebrating special events/holidays and opportunities for positive in person client interactions
  • Encourage parents to develop and maintain a positive parenting routine with their baby including helping parents to manage their baby’s day and evening routines
  • Support and assist parents with applying/practicing basic baby care skills that promote their babies’ health, safety and development
  • Respond to parent conflicts and provides conflict resolution as needed
  • Make referrals to case-manager, SMH centre support staff and/or other community agencies
  • Assist with meal and snack preparations as required
  • Additional duties as assigned by SMH as required

3. HEALTH AND SAFETY FACILITATOR

  • Responsible for the immediate safety of the parents, babies, staff and building: conducts building checks, reports anomalies and potential safety concerns as per protocol
  • Responsible to ensure that the residence and bedrooms meet Fire, Health and Safety Standards at all times
  • Meal preparation for the following day in addition to: comprehensive sanitization of all kitchen surfaces and dining spaces and appliances, replenishing food and other dining items
  • Responsible to complete full disinfecting rotation schedule and night cleaning rotation as per schedule or as needs require, including facility cleaning and all common use baby equipment/toys according to Public Health mandated guidelines and Residential Guidelines
  • Carry out full laundry routine, for linens/blankets/towels
  • Implement SMH on-call procedure guidelines at all times, and communicate with SMH On-Call as directed in policy and alerts the necessary authorities in the event of a health, safety or security issues at the residence
  • Dispensing medication as per policy and procedures of SMH as required
  • Responsible to ensure that the working environment has a clean and organized appearance, and take the initiative to rectify any issues
  • Demonstrate understanding, applies and upholds all St Marys Home and Residential Policies and Procedures
  • Leave common office and living spaces clean and sanitized, removing all garbage each shift.
  • Additional duties as assigned by SMH as required

4. TEAM CONTRIBUTOR

  • Responsible to complete/read all required forms and documentation as per established protocols
  • Complete pre-intake and Day 1 administration
  • Responsible for the completion of all admission and discharge parent documentation
  • Complete shift changes and case review when required
  • Responsible for bed linen laundry, overseeing linens, sorting donations and gifts
  • Complete all shift tasks as directed by supervisor
  • Participating in all agency meetings and agency training opportunities when required.
  • Support and contribute to positive staff team function
  • Support integrative approach to parent service between the Residence and Young Parent Outreach Centre and with external agency service partners and community agencies
  • Additional duties for overnight included, as assigned by Residence Manager as participants are sleeping for the majority of the shift

5. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Needs of pregnant and parenting youth
  • Barriers and risk factors that impact on life choices, e.g. violence, abuse, addictions, self-harm
  • Pregnancy, childbirth and parenting; especially care of infants
  • Community services and resources available to support and address needs identified by participants
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team
  • Working within a residential 24/7 operation
  • Teaching and modeling appropriate behavior, communication and life skills
  • Working as part of a team to ensure consistent supports and services to young women and their babies
  • Certificate and applied knowledge of Crisis Prevention Intervention would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of adolescent pregnancy and parenting issues
  • Knowledge of Infant Mental Health and Attachment is a strong asset

Experience:

  • Child and Youth Work Diploma or Social Worker Diploma or professional equivalency
  • 2 years of progressive experience working with at risk youth, mental health, family violence, trauma and infant mental health
  • Experience working in a Residential Setting is an asset
