This position may be located in Victoria or Kamloops; other Ministry of Forests office locations across BC may be considered based on operational requirements and office space availability. Alternative locations could include Fire Centres in Castlegar, Parksville, Williams Lake, Prince George, and Smithers.
An eligibility list may be established for future permanent and temporary opportunities.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) works to keep British Columbians safe from wildfires and floods and contributes to managing other emergencies through prevention, preparedness, response and recovery programs and partnerships at the international, national, provincial, and local levels. BCWS has a presence in communities across BC, with thirty-three Fire Zones, six regional Fire Centres, and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria. BCWS has approximately 350 full-time staff and over 1700 seasonal employees.

The Predictive Services Unit (PSU) consists of a multidisciplinary team within Wildfire Operations consisting of fire behaviour specialists, fire weather forecasters, and technology specialists who collect, synthesize, and interpret complex data and provide expertise in high-impact wildfire risk evaluations. The PSU develops innovative products, services, and technology solutions to advance risk-based, data driven decision making for wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

The Predictive Services Officer provides broad senior level expertise to manage the research, data analysis and reporting functions that support strategic BCWS planning and operational decision making at executive and Provincial levels. As a member of the PSU multidisciplinary team within Wildfire Operations, this position is the subject matter expert on fire behaviour, fire science, data analytics, and technology. This role is responsible for advancing the organization’s business intelligence and developing innovative solutions that address complex, high impact emergency response and strategic planning needs of the BCWS.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management, public administration, business administration or equivalent knowledge plus 2 years recent related experience; OR
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge plus 4 years recent related experience; OR
  • Grade 12 plus 6 years related experience an equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Minimum two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in program or project management.
  • Experience working on land and resource management issues.
  • Valid Class 5 driver license.


PREFERENCE STATEMENTS:

  • Demonstrated experience as a Fire Behaviour Analyst.
  • Demonstrated competency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data analysis.
  • Experience in project management related to the field of technology.
  • Advanced studies in wildfire science.
