Job Summary

The role of the Specialist Business Architecture is to support the Expert and Sr. Expert Business Architects to define the business architecture in terms of Why (strategy models), What (business capability model), How (value streams), Who (organizational models) and When (transformation models and roadmaps) to support the current and future business architecture initiatives and artifacts. The responsibilities include identifying impacts and recommending solutions in terms of people, process and data/information changes required to reach the project/initiative business objectives.


Main Responsibilities

Contribute to Business Architectures

  • Work with the Expert and Sr. Expert Business Architects to define business outcomes which will be used as a foundation to develop an initiative’s business value
  • Support the production of business architecture artifacts (strategy models, business capability model, value streams, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps)
  • Work with peer domain architects, produce and maintain appropriate relationships between business, information, application, technology and solution architects to build consistent and customer centric architecture
  • Interact with solution architects to explain the business architecture and ensure understanding of the business outcomes
  • Analyze, synthesize, document, explain and communicate business information and solution gaps to technical teams and vice versa
  • Identify impact and recommend solutions in terms of people, process and data/information changes required to reach the project/initiative business objectives.
  • Contribute to documentation, application and communication of business architecture standards

Architecture Practice Development

  • Coach and educate peer architects on past practices, architecture artifacts and systems to build up the team’s overall understanding of CN’s business (capabilities, processes, organisation structure, business lines, operations, etc.)
  • Educate and explain how business architecture aids in achieving CN’s business strategy and delivery of the expected business outcomes
  • Educate and explain the purpose, value and use of the various business architecture models
  • Educate and influence I&T so everyone understands business strategy and outcomes
  • Be a champion for effective change
  • Work closely with the Architects and other I&T stakeholders on the continuous improvement of the Architecture Practice in I&T.


Governance

  • Work with peer domain architects, define a comprehensive governance model to ensure solutions are developed according to the developed business architecture
  • Govern solution architecture and development to ensure alignment with developed business architectures
  • Define and enforce business architecture standards and controls
  • Manage business architecture dependencies between projects

Requirements

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems (or equivalent degree and experience)


Skills/Knowledge

  • A solid understanding of CN’s overall business, including products, services, functions and operations (with strong business acumen)
  • Recognized as an authority for thorough understanding of one or more business capabilities
  • Good knowledge of business architecture best practices
  • Ability to produce business architecture artifacts such as strategy models, business capability model, data/information models, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change
  • Ability to understand complex problems and synthetize information to multiple types of audiences
  • Familiarity with strategic planning, facilitation and relationship management
  • Strong analytical, conceptual and communication skills
  • Ability to influence and drive change throughout the organization
  • Motivated by short-term value and long-term results


Experience

  • Good experience understanding business and operating models, defining outcome driven strategies and building business architectures reflecting the required changes in business capabilities
  • Minimum 5 years overall work experience
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrating technical leadership qualities and/or overseeing deliverables


Assets

  • Business Architecture Guild certification will be considered an important asset
  • Experience leading a team


Working Conditions

  • Hybrid (work from home and be available for working in team workshops at HQ in Montreal)
