JOB SUMMARY

The Shelter Support Worker (SSW) works within a multi-disciplinary setting using a consultative and team approach to provide support and services to individuals who are homeless within the City of Ottawa's Physical Distancing Centre to ensure a safe and secure living/working environment, to support the stabilization and implementation of the Client Service Plan.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Community college diploma or university degree in a related field is desirable

Minimum of 1 year of related experience in a social services setting

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates are assets
Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate is an asset

KNOWLEDGE

  • Community resources
  • Issues affecting homeless persons, families and women fleeing abuse
  • Strong knowledge of Ottawa’s shelter system and supporting agencies
  • Social services agencies and programs
  • City of Ottawa policies and procedures, departmental policies and procedures
  • Case management process for shelters
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • Training on HIFIS is desirable

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
