Being Senior Advisor, Commodity Tax in the National Bank's Tax Department means working closely with the Accounting Department, being proactive and acting as an expert on all matters related to consumption taxes.

You will be part of the Tax Department and will be responsible for advising the Bank and its Canadian subsidiaries (Bank) on commodity taxes, while supporting your partners in achieving their business and financial objectives in order to contribute to the Bank's results and financial strength.

Your role

As a Senior Advisor, you will assess and communicate commodity tax issues for the Bank and its subsidiaries, including tax compliance, while listening to the needs of partners in order to propose solutions tailored to their needs in order to support the implementation of the Bank's activities.

You will also be involved in the development, implementation and application of commodity tax policies, standards and procedures and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes while innovating in the ways of doing the work.

More specifically, you will have to:

  • Act as a tax advisor to the Bank and its Canadian subsidiaries to ensure their compliance with Canadian legislation (federal and provincial)
  • Conduct research and analyze technical issues that arise in connection with requests for advisory services from internal clients of the Bank and its subsidiaries
  • Review contracts with suppliers, customers and partners to ensure compliance with commodity tax provisions
  • Identify, implement and review processes by proposing ideas and solutions for improvement to mitigate financial risks related to regulatory requirements
  • Assist in the coordination of tax audits and pre-approval requests and help maintain a collaborative and professional relationship with tax authorities
  • Closely support the Tax Accounting team in the production of the annual consumption tax returns of the Bank and its Canadian subsidiaries
  • Perform any other tasks related to commodity taxes

This position reports to the Senior Director, Commodity Taxes.

Skills required
  • Completed bachelor's degree (in accounting or law)
  • Accounting Designation (CPA) or Legal Certification obtained
  • Master's degree in taxation or 2nd cycle diploma in taxation or having completed the CPA Order's GST/HST In-Depth Tax Course (an asset)
  • Minimum of 4 to 5 years of relevant experience in commodity taxes
  • Excellent command of Excel, MS suite and other application software (including SAP and TaxPrep Form, an asset)
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Excellent team spirit and ability to collaborate effectively
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills
  • Rigor, meticulousness and sense of initiative
  • Good ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Bilingualism (spoken/written) French and English essential because you will regularly transact with partners located across Canada
