SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is seeking an enthusiastic
Safety & Wellness Officer to contribute to the development of health & safety strategies, a wellness program, and overseeing the implementation of these strategies. Under the direction of the Manager of Occupational Health, you will work closely with clinical leaders and front-line staff as well as colleagues within Occupational Health & Safety Services, your goal is to provide consultation and professional collaboration with key stakeholders, including Union partners and the Joint Health & Safety Committee to promote Health & Safety and ensure legislative compliance within GBGH.
WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR…
As the
Safety & Wellness Officer, you will assist the Manager of Occupational Health in ensuring compliance with and enforces applicable H&S Legislation, Regulations, Codes and Standards. You will be responsible for developing programs that create awareness and motivation and provides tools to employees that help them adapt and maintain a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. Creating wellness educational campaigns, behaviour change programming, health assessments and screenings, smoking cessation, and organizing health and wellness event at GBGH. To the extent possible campaigns or educational events may also be made available to patients with support of clinical leadership.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Supporting GBGH’s health & safety program and initiatives, and Co-Chairing the JHSC
- Conducts investigations of occupational accidents, critical incidents, and occupational diseases to identify basic and underlying root causes and steps to prevent recurrences by utilizing the hierarchy of controls and monitoring effectiveness conducting risk assessments, making corrective action recommendations
- Directs Leadership corrective action development based upon prioritization of risks (Risk Matrix) to implement sound interventional strategies
- Analyzes statistical information on accident, injury, and incident trends to develop strategies for corrective action and elimination of potential hazards
- Presents and communicates data and recommended course of action to Senior Leadership, JHSC, and Union partners
- Responsible for collaborating with Leadership and staff to assess and identify ergonomic and musculoskeletal hazards
- Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with area leadership to review findings, trends, and compliance to legislative requirements
- Serve as the initial contact for all site-specific health and safety activities
- Assesses risks and identifies, prioritizes, and controls hazards on the project, prior to starting work activities and during work activities, including preparation of Job Hazard Assessments and Workplace Violence Prevention
- Reviewing and analyzing WSIB claims decisions for impact, initiating appeals as appropriate
- Conducts or participates in regular project safety inspections and initiates and completes corrective actions for safety issues and hazards observed
- Plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain hospital-wide wellness initiatives and programs
- Assist in employee communications about wellness programming
- Implement related activities, including onsite health screenings, lunch and learn seminars, blood drives, flu-shots, fitness classes, etc.
- Make budget recommendations regarding wellness initiatives/programs
- Analyze data and/or reports collected from health risk assessments, etc.
- Develop a network of resources and contacts to strengthen programming and knowledge
- Establish relationships with all internal departments to increase involvement in wellness components
- Creating and maintaining Safety and Wellness policies and procedures
- Planning, developing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating programs and services as guided by Hospital policies
Job Requirements:
MUST HAVES…
- Successfully completed post-secondary diploma/degree from an accredited university or college in Health Sciences, Occupational Health, Social Work, Physical Education, with specialization in Recreation, Fitness and Wellness or related degree is required
- Previous related work experience dealing with legislation, WSIB reporting and legislation, workplace accommodation and disability management, or as a Human Resources professional in a unionized environment
- Knowledge of planning, coordinating, and conducting a wellness program
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse workforce, and client population and community
- Ability to maintain confidential documents and information
- Highly resourceful, solution-oriented, and excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent computer and administrative skills including report writing and proficiency in with MS Office
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, and teamwork
- Flexibility and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with solid planning skills and use of good judgment
- Ability to prioritize time, work, and projects efficiently, working well under pressure and with minimal supervision

- Available to work occasional evenings or weekends at special events and meetings
IT’S AN ADDED PLUS IF YOU HAVE…
- Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Management preferred
- Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional preferred
- Registered Nurse with one of DOHN (Diploma Occupational Health Nursing), CCRC (Commission of Certified Rehabilitation Counsellors), RRP (Registered Rehabilitation Professional), COHN (Certified Occupational Health Nursing), OT/PTA or NIDMAR
- Safety or Human Resources Professionals with experience with all levels of disability management and accommodation
- Specialized training and certification in various fitness and wellness programming
- Experience in planning, organizing and supervising wellness programs
- Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, Ontarians with Disabilities Act, OHSA
- Bilingual French/English is an asset
