Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Genomics Laboratory Supervisor, the Research Technician is primarily responsible for the execution of genomics-related research integral to plant breeding. This position is expected to perform various responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, seed sowing, tissue sampling for genotyping, mutagenesis of seeds and/or pollen, DNA extraction using both manual and robotic technologies, DNA QA/QC, PCR, data analysis, DNA library preparation and sequencing. This position requires an appropriate combination of problem solving, decision-making experience and interpersonal skills. The candidate requires strong multi-tasking skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, intermediate proficiency in MS Office applications and excellent attention to detail.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in all aspects of the genomics laboratory as needed
  • Assist with research activities in the laboratory and greenhouse
  • Design and plan experiments in collaboration with the Genomics Laboratory Supervisor
  • Troubleshoot protocols and procedures
  • Collect data and perform analysis
  • Actively participate in team meetings
  • Write and review protocols and procedures as needed
  • Research new techniques, obtain training and provide training to others
  • Engage with members of the home team and others at Vineland
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Inform the Genomics Laboratory Supervisor about reagent ordering needs
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date notes for all activities

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (BSc and/or MSc) in related discipline is required
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a fast-paced molecular biology laboratory setting is required
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence
  • Basic knowledge of plant breeding/biology
  • Knowledge of genetics and genomics is required
  • Experience performing DNA extractions from a number of different plant species
  • Experience with various molecular biology techniques and related equipment
  • Experience organizing and compiling data
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks
  • Ability to work well in the context of a dynamic environment with multiple projects running simultaneously
